ᐅ Rainwater Harvesting Cistern for Garden Irrigation – Which Pump Should I Use?

Greetings!
I am gradually starting to plan the garden irrigation for my soon-to-be-completed house. For now, I want to keep it simple and non-smart: a cistern (6,000 liters) is installed underground, and I plan to water the garden conventionally using a pump and garden hose. The farthest lawn area will be reachable with about 35 to 40 meters (115 to 130 feet) of hose length. The cistern is located at the lowest point, about 2.50 meters (8 feet) underground.
Now I am facing a confusing variety of possible pumps: suction pump, dirty water pump, submersible pump, garden pump, deep well pump... several thousand liters per hour, various pressure ratings in bar... Does anyone have good advice?

Surface-mounted boxes would be simpler and more cost-effective. I would recommend Rainbird or Hunter instead. Gardena is not as durable, and you’re mostly paying for the brand name. From what I’ve seen, Rainbird water outlets work differently; you need some kind of key or pipe to operate them. With Gardena, you can just connect a hose directly. Or maybe I found the wrong product.

I can decide later whether to use underground boxes or pedestal-mounted outlets. I’m still a bit unsure about how to connect the pump. What does the weather protection housing look like, and how is it fixed inside the cistern?
Does the pump stand on the bottom of the cistern?
I also found something: someone created a kind of filter using a KG pipe and submerged the pump inside it to prevent debris from being sucked in. Is that a good idea?

Regarding the pumps, the following models have been mentioned and are ones I can recall at the moment:
In my opinion, the longer warranty period for the Gardena pumps is noteworthy. I couldn’t find significant technical differences between the two Gardena models despite the price difference. Interestingly, the inox version is cheaper than expected.
Unfortunately, the T.I.P. pump has several negative reviews online. It is also available without the automatic control (without AUT in the model name). If purchased from Globus Baumarkt, it comes with a 7-year warranty but costs 460€, which is considerably more.
A friend of mine owns the Oase pump and is very satisfied with it. It is more expensive and only comes with a 3-year warranty.
| Manufacturer/Model | Motor Power | Flow Rate | Max. Pressure | Price | Warranty |
| Gardena 6100/5 inox automatic | 1100W | 6100 l/h (1610 US gallons/hour) | 4.7 bar (68 psi) | 250€ | 5 years |
| Gardena 6000/5 automatic | 1050W | 6000 l/h (1585 US gallons/hour) | 4.5 bar (65 psi) | 330€ | 5 years |
| T.I.P. AJ 4 Plus 100/57 AUT | 1100W | 6000 l/h (1585 US gallons/hour) | 5.7 bar (83 psi) | 320€ | 2 years |
| Oase ProMax Pressure 6000/8 | 1100W | 6000 l/h (1585 US gallons/hour) | 5.7 bar (83 psi) | 420€ | 3 years |

Pull the HDPE pipe to the desired location. What you connect afterwards doesn’t really matter.
The pump should be positioned just above ground level. A filter is not strictly necessary.
Hang the pump either from chains or ropes.
A weatherproof enclosure could be, for example, FLT 300200130 TR wall enclosure IP65, 200 x 300 x 130 mm (8 x 12 x 5 inches), transparent.
Just check Google for more. Attach the enclosure either with strong mounting adhesive or, preferably, secure it to the cistern with anchors.
