ᐅ Rainwater Harvesting Cistern for Garden Irrigation – Which Pump Should I Use?

Greetings!

I am gradually starting to plan the garden irrigation for my soon-to-be-completed house. For now, I want to keep it simple and non-smart: a cistern (6,000 liters) is installed underground, and I plan to water the garden conventionally using a pump and garden hose. The farthest lawn area will be reachable with about 35 to 40 meters (115 to 130 feet) of hose length. The cistern is located at the lowest point, about 2.50 meters (8 feet) underground.

Now I am facing a confusing variety of possible pumps: suction pump, dirty water pump, submersible pump, garden pump, deep well pump... several thousand liters per hour, various pressure ratings in bar... Does anyone have good advice?

@Climbee they gave you the wrong advice. The irrigation system is not frost-protected; instead, it is simply drained, for example, using compressed air. So you can still easily catch up on that...

Do you only want to connect hoses?

Yes, a friend also recommended them to me once.
So far, only hoses were planned.

You can still use a hand pump.

Ground water containers are simpler and cheaper than water columns. You just connect a PE-HD pipe to them. Inside, there is a Gardena connector. Simply plug in a hose.

However, for a new installation, I would always recommend installing an irrigation system. Whether it is automatically controlled or not is secondary for now...

Rick, I know, but since we have a slope and you can’t completely prevent water from pooling, we were advised against it. It also seemed like too much effort for us.
I have to say, we are quite satisfied with the two hose reels. Once the perennials are well established, they hardly need any watering. We wouldn’t have been able to include raised beds in an irrigation system anyway, and as I said, I almost find watering to be meditative.

It’s a different story if you have a large lawn – then we probably would have made a different decision.

No slope needs to be installed, and we actually have a significant incline...
Not all the water has to be removed either. Just use a compressor and blow it out for 10 minutes. That’s all.
But if you’re that satisfied, all the better.

Briefly about the amount of water needed, since we talked about 2%:

- Lawns require about 20 liters/m² (0.43 gallons/ft²) per week. For 250m² (2690 ft²), that is 5m³ (176 cubic feet). You need to add the amount of water missing from rainfall.
- Hedges and similar plants require more.

Regarding the pump, I have a question for rick2018: For irrigation, is pressure or flow rate more important? Usually, you can’t have both at the same time.
