ᐅ Children's Room Size / Floor Plan

Hello,

we are planning similarly and have already received a non-binding proposal from a company.

Our budget is tight, so our house will probably be rather small.

The two children's rooms are each planned at 11.15 sqm (with a steep sloping roof, the actual floor area is 14.15 sqm (150 sq ft)).
Is that enough, or is it quite small?

It might be possible to take about 1 sqm (11 sq ft) each from the bathroom and the master bedroom...

I also always had a small room and it didn’t bother me. Still, considering the sizes houses are usually built in today...

Thanks and best regards,
LHT

Hello,

Thank you for your replies.
Here is how I see it:

1.) We have a limited budget, so we have to make sacrifices, including for the children's bedrooms.

2.) My children’s bedrooms were only about 12 sqm (130 sq ft), and I never minded.

3.) How long do children actually live with their parents? I moved out for university at nearly 20 and never lived at home again.

We also think that in the end, it will most likely just be my husband and me living in the house, so why build a huge house? We plan to live here for more than 20 years, assuming we stay healthy — after all, you only build once.

We also have a small bedroom, but an attic that has been converted, which can be used as a children’s room if needed later; for now, it will be an office.

Hello!

Why do you want to build at all? Just to have the same as social housing? If you’re going to mortgage your life to the bank, it should at least be worth something.

Also, your arguments sound very resistant to advice. How long do kids really live in the house – a mere 20 years. And then you live alone in a huge 140 sqm (1,500 sq ft) house – who wants a hobby room, an ironing room, a sauna...
And a converted attic is great – especially in July/August.
12 sqm (130 sq ft) is enough – do you bike to work, shower with cold water, and watch black-and-white TV – like in the old days?

And clearly: More than half of our neighbors have built a second time – and so have we.

So either go big or don’t do it at all. And if it’s not enough, then so be it.

Regards, TomTom1.

Hello Tomtom,

Well, I wouldn’t call myself resistant to advice.

And I believe that, either way, it will be nicer for our children to grow up in a house they own rather than renting all their lives.

That’s quite an argument. It not only falls short, it’s completely off track.

The kids really don’t care if they live in a rental apartment or a house they own. The main thing is that the rooms are big enough.

Aha…

Sure, room size is obviously the only criterion children have for their home…

That being able to be noisy without the neighbor complaining in a sound-sensitive rental building isn’t an advantage… that your own garden to play in obviously isn’t either!
And that there is generally more space in the house compared to the rental apartment is also something kids don’t care about at all…
12 sqm (130 sq ft) is enough – do you bike to work, shower with cold water, and have a black-and-white TV – like in the old days?

Could you maybe explain the connection here? What does (in your opinion) a too small children’s room have to do with cycling, cold showers, etc.?

I think it should be clear anyway that there are far more important things for children in a family than the size of their bedroom… How parents treat their children, the social environment, etc., are MUCH, MUCH more important than the square meters (square feet) of the child’s room… so TE: don’t let yourself be unsettled! 11-12 sqm (120-130 sq ft) is not spacious, but you are not limiting your child’s future or destroying their childhood with that…
And then you live all alone in a huge 140 sqm (1,500 sq ft) house – who would want a hobby room, an ironing room, a sauna…

Especially when living as a couple, a hobby room fits into any 140 sqm (1,500 sq ft) house… especially if you still have a basement, there’s enough space for such rooms, even if children live in the house! And an ironing room and a sauna, I think, are not everyone’s wish… Some prefer to iron in the living area while watching TV or chatting with others, or supervising the kids doing homework… Do you also have a shoe-cleaning room planned?
And quite clearly: more than half of our neighbors have built for the second time – and so have we.

So, either do it properly or not at all. And if it’s not enough, then it’s just not.

So what now? Didn’t the first time suffice for the dream house? Why build at all then?

Of course, the room size is the only factor children consider about their home...

And the fact that there is generally more space in the whole house compared to an apartment doesn’t matter to children at all...

But have you ever heard that there are also houses available for rent?

I can only laugh about this discussion now.

I really enjoyed living in my own home—even as a child.

Our almost 4-year-old is slowly starting to understand that we want to build a house and is already really excited about it.

At the moment, our children share a tiny 16 sqm (172 sq ft) bedroom. And you know what? They have plenty of nice toys, and where do they spend most of their day? Wherever I am: in the kitchen, the living room... Almost never in their own room!

Honestly, I don’t need a sauna (I much prefer going to public ones), nor a shoe-cleaning, ironing, or nose-picking room.

I also wonder what people consider small about a 140 sqm (1507 sq ft) house. Were you all born as wealthy millionaires or what?

Sorry.

Thanks Shism for your support
