Hello everyone,

I’m currently considering upgrading the look of my Billy shelf, but I haven’t decided yet whether to paint it or use adhesive film. My goal is to achieve a durable and high-quality appearance while keeping the process as simple as possible.

I’m wondering: what are the advantages and disadvantages of painting versus applying adhesive film on a piece of furniture like the Billy shelf? Also, how do these options compare in terms of effort, durability, and appearance?

I’ve read that painting offers better scratch resistance and creates a more refined finish, but the work involved—sanding and applying multiple coats—should not be underestimated. On the other hand, I have concerns about bubbles or the film peeling off quickly, though it seems like a fairly straightforward method, especially for those without painting experience.

Has anyone here painted or applied adhesive film to a Billy shelf and could share their experience? I would also be interested in tips regarding specific paint types or film materials.

Thanks in advance!

Hey BISIN,

"I’ve read that painting is better at preventing scratches and gives a more refined finish," – that’s definitely true! 🙂

A few years ago, I painted my Billy, and it still looks great over time. Of course, it requires patience because you need to sand, prime, and apply at least two coats of paint. But the result really feels high quality, almost like furniture from a store costing 500€ more. 😉

I’ve also tried covering it with adhesive film, which is quicker to do, but the film tends to develop small bubbles quickly, especially if the surface isn’t perfectly smooth or clean. Plus, scratches are hard to repair, and after a while, the film tends to lift at the edges – I’m not sure if you would be satisfied with that in the long run.

My advice: If you enjoy DIY and want a more elegant look, go for painting! If you need a fast solution and don’t mind some minor wear and tear, covering is fine.

Hope this helps :-)

Hello BISIN,

I would like to take a closer look at the technical aspects, especially regarding the materials and work steps involved.

About painting:

First, you need to get the surface completely clean and smooth. It becomes truly professional if you carefully sand the Billy shelf first, even if it is already painted. This allows the new paint layer to adhere better. After that, I recommend applying at least 1-2 coats of primer (preferably acrylic-based, as it is compatible with wood and particleboard). Only once the primer is dry should you start with the actual paint (acrylic or polyurethane paint, matte or gloss). The drying time between coats is important – some paints require 4 to 6 hours so the finish becomes hard and durable.

After painting, the surface is more resistant to scratches, moisture, and UV radiation. However, depending on the paint and indoor climate, the process can be quite demanding and requires time and good ventilation.

About applying adhesive films:

Films are usually made of PVC or a vinyl base with adhesive on the back. The advantages are clear: they can be applied directly and dry immediately, and are also available with patterns. But there are some technical challenges: the surface of the Billy shelf must be absolutely grease-free and smooth, or bubbles or wrinkles will form. There are also different types of adhesives: air-release films (which are easier to apply without bubbles) or regular films, which often require experience to achieve a smooth finish.

The durability depends on the type of film; polyester or carbon films, for example, last longer than cheap PVC options. However, scratches are irreversible, and damaged spots will need repair or replacement.

One more question for you: How much time do you want to plan for this project, and how important is long-term durability compared to short-term aesthetic results?

Best regards,

Hello everyone,

regarding the topic "Changing the design of a Billy shelf – painting or covering?", I would like to add the following:

In my view, the following objective aspects are crucial:

1. Durability: Painted surfaces are significantly more resistant to UV light and wear compared to films. Paint can be sanded down and repainted if necessary. Films are generally not repairable.

2. Application: Painting requires preparation (sanding, priming) and proper conditions (good ventilation, dust-free environment). Covering with film is simpler, quicker, and can be removed without residue.

3. Cost: Painting is less expensive in terms of materials (brush, sandpaper, paint) but more time-consuming. Films are more costly depending on quality but faster to apply.

4. Appearance: Paint usually results in a smoother and more refined surface finish; finish paint can be matte or glossy. Films offer more options in colors and patterns, but the overall look is often more "artificial."

Conclusion: If you plan to use the Billy shelf long term and want a high-quality result, painting is the better choice. Covering is useful for temporary decoration or quick visual changes.
