I wanted to gather some ideas on how you have solved your roller shutter control or if you even have one at all.

We are building an urban villa with a granny flat. For the granny flat, simple switches near the windows are sufficient for me; for the upper floor of the villa, switches installed below the light switch by the door would also be enough.

In the basement, I would prefer a more centralized system with a timer. My ideal solution was actually a wall-mounted display from elero or Becker, but those options are quite expensive. It is important to me to have a function that lowers all roller shutters in the basement when leaving the house.

I don’t like remote controls because you probably end up constantly looking for them, and they don’t look good either. I also don’t want to control the shutters via an app. I would consider having switches at every window plus a central timer—preferably wireless—that also allows lowering all shutters at once with a simple push of a button.

We installed Somfy io wireless motors everywhere and sourced the control accessories ourselves.
- Wall switches / remote controls
- The affordable central unit (Connexoon) for timer control
- Wind sensors

What I don't like about Somfy:
- No open protocol; there are probably better options available
- Timer control in the app: offset to sunrise/astro timer limited to +/- 1 hour

Advantages:
- No planning effort required
- Switches can be placed anywhere
- For us, no significant extra cost compared to a simple wired solution without a central unit

I haven’t looked much into scenarios like leaving the house, but it should be possible with Somfy. It works through the app, but you need to take out your phone for that. You might need the “larger” central unit for full automation. You can also link one switch to control multiple motors.

I chose Homematic.

The question is which motors will be used and what solution the electrician suggests.

We only chose empty shells because the builder wanted an extra 200€ per unit. I will install the motors myself, independently from the electrician. Since we want to keep the costs reasonable, I don’t want to install an expensive Becker motor, which also costs around 200€ per unit.

I have had pretty good experience with Jarolift, and their motors cost between 40 and 50€.

I’ve looked into that as well. Do the switches stay in place? But can you control all the roller shutters at once without using a smartphone?
