ᐅ Central computer system with terminals in the rooms

Hello everyone 🙂

I am new to the forum and I hope this is the right place to ask.

I am currently planning a new build. I have now reached the point where I am thinking about the locations for my computers. I work with computers a lot, both privately and professionally.

I am planning an office where I will often work from home. Ideally, I wouldn’t have my computers right next to me, but rather in a separate room. It would also be great if not every child needed their own PC, but this could be managed centrally as well.

I have thought of two options:

1. PCs located in a central room, with signals distributed to other rooms via HDMI or USB cables inside the walls. I’m not sure if this is even possible?

2. PCs in a central room and terminals in the individual rooms. Here I wonder which terminals would be suitable (up to 4 monitors) and whether special software is needed. I am familiar with Citrix professionally, but I don’t know how expensive it could be for private users.

What options do I have or do you use?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Regards,
Chris

Well, to summarize:
Someone who thinks they know what they’re talking about comes up with a crazy idea they believe is revolutionary.
Everyone takes the time to argue and offer alternative suggestions.
Mr. Crazy Idea gets offended, and everyone else is considered wrong.

P.S. Like others here, I know the subject well—it’s simply a crazy idea, nothing more.

I don’t know much about this topic, but I’m a user with IT affinity, and yet it was still seen as a crazy idea^^

Unless he’s a rocket scientist for the Chinese. Then it was about room building.

I haven’t read the entire thread, as I lost interest after the first few posts. As an experienced tech enthusiast, here’s my two cents:

We plan to use a Raspberry Pi in the KNX cabinet to act as the server. This will run applications like ownCloud, OpenHAB, and so on.

Replacing this with a proper server equipped with decent hardware and virtualization software (Hyper-V, ESXi, etc.) would probably be the only “reasonable” and cost-effective option for centralization. Nowadays, there are plenty of ways to access the virtual machines that go almost unnoticed (for example, HDMI stick PCs or a Raspberry Pi). The question is what you want to achieve with this. If you want the kids to be able to play games, GPU virtualization is necessary (which is expensive), or the kids would have to switch to a cloud-based shadow server (which would mean relying on a third-party provider, but streaming services will likely be the future of gaming). For a project like this, I definitely wouldn’t install any new cables. Our approach is one flush-mounted Wi-Fi access point per floor.
