Hello,
what are your thoughts on the topic of having a basement or not?
Generally, most people advise against a basement because it’s expensive, dark (not necessarily), and often only used for a party room, sauna, or laundry room.
Has anyone had experience without a basement but with a large garage? Does that really work?
Where do you hang laundry? Where do you put a workbench, tools, bicycles, and so on?
Thanks for your opinions!

It works, as far as granted.
Laundry is washed and hung to dry in the upper floor or in the garden.
Garden furniture and similar items are stored in the old above-ground cellar.
Trash bins, tools, bicycles, and similar items are kept in the garage or utility room.
Decorations, suitcases, etc. are stored in the attic.

The answer is both simple and complex. A basement is certainly much more expensive than a garage. The basement offers more functionality and, above all, direct access to the house. On the other hand, the garage can serve many purposes, including a workshop or party space, and may also have access to the house, but it is generally considered an outdoor area. As is the case in many real families, the decision will depend on the price in relation to how often the space is used.
We had a beam storage area installed in the attic space of our garage (approximately 7x9m (23x30 ft)) with direct access to the house, using planed tongue-and-groove boards for half of the area (just under €2000 extra cost). It looks great, and the storage space created (30sqm (323 sq ft)) feels like a small cellar.
In my view, it depends on several factors.
- Plot: Is it even large enough for a multi-car garage.
- I don’t want a gym inside a garage.
- Workshop for bulky items. Can you even fit that in the basement.
- ....
Everyone has to decide for themselves what is important to them.

Technical equipment is often installed in the basement. You can’t simply move it to the garage...
What exactly is a large garage? If we assume a standard 0815 suburban house, the garage would need to be an additional 90–100 m² (970–1,080 sq ft). This means the garage’s footprint would be larger than the house itself. Of course, the garage would also require an appropriate foundation slab and roof.
If the soil conditions are not too poor, the cost savings won’t be significant.
In my opinion, it’s not an either-or situation. A garage serves different purposes and has different requirements than a basement.
Usually, the basement is within the thermal envelope, whereas the garage is not.
I would place the laundry room near the bathroom/bedroom/dressing room.
Bicycles should go in the garage for easy access. I prefer to have parties in the living/dining area rather than in the basement or garage. We don’t host raves, though.
