Hi everyone,

We have a basement room that is roughly 3x4 meters (10x13 feet) in size. I would like to install shelves up to the ceiling to store everything that accumulates in a household of five people. Many items will be stored in the popular Really-Useful (35L) boxes, but there will definitely be other boxes and objects as well.
  • Do you have good experiences with any shelving systems?
  • Should it be a heavy-duty shelf?
  • Can you recommend any company or brand?
  • Is a corner shelf worth it, or is it better to simply install shelves "around the corner"?

Thanks!

All Ivar fans here. But what if it shouldn’t be wood after all?

G**gle says Regal Fuchs – as flexible as Ivar (which I also think is the best solution) but made of aluminum with various accessories and many options... I don't know if it's any good though – it looks well thought out at first glance.

Try searching for adjustable shelving units.

I just checked, and IVAR now even offers metal shelves and steel cabinet inserts. Take a look around the website.

The wood itself is practically indestructible; my oldest pieces, which are currently stored in the basement, date back to 1981.

Although it’s really not that cheap… a 90cm (35 inch) segment costs 105€, and unfortunately it’s only 179cm (70 inch) high… hmm… I’ll keep looking a bit more… if anything else comes up for you…

I recommend doing a proper storage planning first, so you know how many shelves you need and at what intervals.

For example, one of my IVAR basement shelves has a compartment about 90 cm (35 inches) high. I store cases of beer and water there, and I can still reach the bottles on top.

On the Ikea website, under "Planner" and then "Storage," there is also the option to select an IVAR planner. You can use it at least for this planning phase. Whether you end up choosing IVAR can be decided later.

What is the ceiling height of your basement? It makes sense to place storage boxes on the top level. Also, IVAR side panels are available with a height of 226 cm (89 inches). For example, for the window side, you can also use panels that are 124 cm (49 inches) high.
