Hello!!
I have a problem with my ceiling.
The ceiling is made of drywall or plasterboard, and due to improper installation (it seems the necessary gaps between the panels and the joint tape are missing), the panels have cracked over the years.
The ceiling is covered with textured wallpaper. The painter wants $2,000 for removing the wallpaper and all related work. A stretch ceiling would cost €4,000.
Since no primer or similar product was probably applied to make the wallpaper easier to remove, this will definitely be a huge job. Additionally, the work would only be manageable with scaffolding (2 floors and ceiling height up to 4.5m (15 feet)).
I have now taken over the apartment, and my budget is exhausted. 🙁
Do you have any ideas on how to do this cost-effectively?
Could I possibly apply joint tape over the existing wallpaper and then paint over it with liquid textured wallpaper?
Or is that completely nonsense? :o
Thanks in advance for your info and suggestions.
Regards, torluell

Hello,
I think the most cost-effective way is to handle the situation yourself.
With the area and height involved, it will certainly be difficult and time-consuming.
Your idea of simply sticking fabric tape on probably won’t be very successful.
Some people fill cracks with acrylic because it can be easily painted over.
That’s not the ideal solution either, but it might serve as a purely temporary cosmetic fix until the budget allows for more.
Otherwise, patience and perseverance remain:
Soak the wallpaper thoroughly using a garden sprayer, allow it to absorb, remove the wallpaper, fill the cracks with joint compound, reapply wallpaper, and paint.
However, if the cause of the cracks is a poor substructure of the drywall, then the result of this effort will also be only temporary.
Hopefully, I was able to help.
Best regards, alteis
PS. The quoted price for the stretch ceiling seems a bit overpriced to me.

Hello altweis,
thank you for your reply.
I had already scraped out the joints and partly widened the panel joints, then filled them with acrylic. The result only lasted a short time, and the cracks have appeared again.
Now I’m thinking about using mesh tape, but I don’t feel like, or have the time, to painstakingly scrape off all the wallpaper from the ceiling. There’s probably a good reason why the painter charges so much. 😀
The contractor for the stretch ceiling calculated 45 m² (485 sq ft), and there are quite a few corners, which is likely to increase the cost significantly. Part of the roof slope was also included.
Maybe someone else has an idea! New panels on top???
Thanks!!!

Hello,
"Putting new panels on top" is rather questionable; in that case, the old ones need to be removed. The problem seems to be with the substructure (wood?). Adding an extra 350 - 400 kg (770 - 880 lbs) by screwing on is probably a bit risky. Try using reinforcement strips, but not over the wallpaper. Basically, a professional should probably take a look at it sometime soon.
Have a good weekend
