In the construction specification we received, the clear ceiling height (bungalow) is specified as 2.50m (8 ft 2 in), which seems too low to us due to underfloor heating, a suspended ceiling for controlled residential ventilation, and possibly additional insulation measures (KfW55 standard).
What elements need to be accounted for in the clear ceiling height?
Comparison values from other homeowners:
- Screed 5cm (2 inches)
- Underfloor heating 5cm (2 inches) (3cm (1 inch) slab + 2cm (1 inch) pipe)
- Insulation 3cm (1 inch) (Energy Saving Ordinance)
- Tiles/carpet/floor covering 1cm (0.4 inch)
What is your actual clear ceiling height, and what do you consider your personal minimum for clear ceiling height?

At some point, you will also face limitations with the maximum sizes of plastic windows. Then comes the costly upgrade to aluminum windows.
If the windows are not enlarged accordingly, it also creates an odd appearance and sense of space inside. That feels quite oppressive.

You are asking here for specific numbers, like ceiling height or screed thickness: that doesn’t really help. The room itself determines the height... if there are no special conditions (client requirements, architecture), then just go with the standard. Size, proportions, function, and windows play a much bigger role—more than just the desire to have it “higher” than a certain value.

The general contractor did not specify the clear room height in their scope of work; I could only get that from the drawing. Since underfloor heating plus controlled ventilation (with a suspended ceiling) is requested, the offer we have does not fit. After inquiring, the general contractor also noticed this—better to have this information beforehand rather than finding out on site. That’s why I’m asking here in the forum.
Maybe don’t post so late at night!

Since underfloor heating and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (requiring a suspended ceiling) are requested, the offer we have does not fit, and when asked, the general contractor also noticed this. It’s better to have this information ready beforehand, not just find out on-site. Hence the question here in the forum.
Maybe don’t post so late at night! Perhaps you should read my entire post again to understand what the ceiling height depends on and that it cannot simply be decided in a forum without further information. Moreover, just accept that other people might have different routines or daily rhythms than you. For me, midnight is not the end of the day.
Apparently, some here don’t seem to be fully alert all day either.

Reference values from other builders
- Screed 5 cm
- Underfloor heating 5 cm (3 cm panel + 2 cm pipe)
- Insulation 3 cm (Energy Saving Ordinance)
- Tiles/carpet/floor covering 1 cm... because none of these should be included: the clear height means the distance between the top surface of the finished floor and the underside of the ceiling plaster.https://www.instagram.com/11antgmxde/
