Hello everyone,

I am currently looking for robust casters or wheels specifically designed for heavier KALLAX shelves, as I want to make my shelf easier to move while keeping it very stable. I am mainly looking for wheels about 77 x 77 mm (3 x 3 inches) in size that can support the heavy weight of fully loaded shelves without compromising stability or damaging the shelf itself.

Does anyone have experience with these kinds of specialized casters or know of suppliers/manufacturers offering high-quality, heavy-duty wheels suitable for KALLAX furniture? The standard wheels from IKEA often aren’t sufficient, as they are designed more for lighter use.

I would really appreciate any tips on where to buy suitable heavy-duty wheels of good quality – also any advice on installation and load capacity.

Thanks in advance!

For heavy KALLAX shelves, I recommend casters from manufacturers like Tente or RWM. They offer casters with load capacities up to 100 kg (220 lbs) per caster. Check out Amazon or specialized caster retailers.

Make sure to pay close attention to the mounting type to ensure the casters are securely attached to the frame.

Hello bryanju,

before deciding on casters, you should definitely estimate the weight per section of your KALLAX shelf. The real issue with heavy KALLAX shelves on casters is not just the load capacity of the caster itself, but also the stability of the lower cabinet section under dynamic stress while moving.

Standard IKEA casters are usually designed for light loads only, often under 50 kg (110 lbs) per caster, which can quickly cause problems with a fully loaded shelf with multiple compartments.

I used casters from Tente, specifically the "Tente Radial" model with a load capacity of 125 kg (275 lbs) per caster. It is important to choose a wide mounting plate to distribute the load well on the shelf base. Otherwise, the wood could deform or crack.

Assembly tip: Use longer and preferably thicker screws to securely fix the casters, ideally with additional metal brackets for reinforcement on the inside. This helps prevent unnecessary twisting of the shelf during movement. Also consider whether you want locking casters if you don’t want the shelf to slide around.

Where to buy: Specialty dealers for furniture casters online, for example rollen-ledder.de or industriezubehoer24.de, also offer very robust models. There you can find detailed load ratings and dimensions that match your shelf exactly.

I would be interested to know how much your shelf weighs or how full it will be. That will help determine the right caster even better.

I agree with that, but I would ask: Have you actually tried replacing the standard IKEA wheels with higher-quality casters, or would it make more sense to reinforce the shelving unit itself or convert it to a rolling base?

Because even if you use heavy-duty casters, there is still a risk that the shelf structure will deform under load if the weight is not well distributed. Functional casters are just one part of the solution—you shouldn’t consider them in isolation.

Also, it’s worth considering the weight and the intended use. A KALLAX unit is often stationary, so a fixed but sturdy base might be more suitable—the casters would then be more for convenience than necessity.

Do you have an idea of the combined weight of the shelf and its contents, and how often you need to move it? That way, alternatives can be explored.

Thank you for the detailed assessment! The shelf (77x77 cm (30x30 inches), 4 compartments, fully loaded with books and electronics) is estimated to weigh around 60–70 kg (130–155 lbs). I want to use it as flexibly as possible in the room, so I really need casters that can permanently support this high weight without damaging the floor structure.

I agree. Stability is key. However, I don’t want to modify the shelf itself and am looking specifically for a replacement or upgrade set of casters, since building a rolling base would be too complex.

Are there any specific recommendations for combinations of casters and mounting methods that have proven effective and are fairly easy to install myself? I’d also appreciate experiences with screw sizes or additional reinforcements.
