Hello everyone, some time ago I bought an IKEA Malm bed and a Malm desk, and I want to keep these pieces of furniture as easy to maintain and durable as possible. My specific question is: which care products are best suited for the surfaces of Malm furniture? I am particularly interested in whether harsh cleaning agents should be avoided, which ingredients in care products are ideal, and if you can recommend products that both clean and protect without damaging the surface. I would also like to know how often the furniture should ideally be cared for to preserve both its appearance and stability. Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!
Thanks already for the many helpful contributions!
@LuMarcel43 Your criticism is justified – I actually don’t have an original source from IKEA and have only tried a few cleaning products myself.
Therefore, I would also be interested in a link to the IKEA care instructions, as that would make the discussion more substantial.
Does anyone else have experience with specific cleaning products that are explicitly marketed for melamine coatings or similar? I want to avoid my new product looking dull or damaged after just a few weeks.

For the benefit of all interested parties: According to the official IKEA care instructions for the Malm series, the following applies:
- Clean with a soft, damp cloth; mild soapy water can be used.
- Do not use abrasive or solvent-based cleaners, as they can damage the surface.
- Care products are not strictly necessary because melamine resin is extremely durable.
- For stains, wipe immediately with a damp cloth and, if needed, some soap.
Those wishing to maintain the shine can occasionally try furniture polish without silicones, but be cautious of residues.
Here is a direct excerpt from the IKEA care manual, slightly summarized. This should provide reliable and clear information.
