torben.mHi,
There are many things you can do with concrete afterwards. You can acid wash, grind, polish, sandblast, expose aggregate, and more. Search for “betonsuisse” here for a great overview. Of course, depending on the surface, it will be more or less susceptible to these treatments.
We also have a fair-faced concrete staircase that was cast on site. Compared to precast concrete stairs made in a factory, it’s almost impossible to achieve an acceptable surface quality on site. That’s why the staircase was recently ground by a specialist company, and small holes were filled with a special filler.
Afterwards, the concrete (like all other fair-faced concrete surfaces) is sealed. This can easily be done yourself and does not change the appearance of the surface.
You can also search for “Hebau” on this topic, for example.
I’ve attached a photo showing how the staircase looked this evening after grinding.
Regards

Hi!
Our exposed concrete staircase was cast on site two weeks ago. We had instructed the foreman that only a skim coat should be applied as the final layer. At first, we didn’t have much hope that it would turn out well, but the result is really impressive—hats off to him.
The carpenter was actually supposed to be on site today to temporarily cover the staircase nicely, and our current plan is to apply a concrete cire coating.
Look around online. You can find quite a bit of information about it!

Concrete cire would also be my recommendation now. The system includes suitable top coatings for exterior areas as well, making it walkable, waterproof, and so on.
If you want exposed concrete, I would consider whether a precast element could be used, which might be more cost-effective, and then apply plaster or render accordingly.
