Last weekend, we finally moved into our construction site.

Now we’re starting to think about furnishing. We are having a large 2.2m x 1.2m (7 ft 3 in x 3 ft 11 in) table custom-made. Of course, we still need suitable chairs for it. Since we have a vinyl floor, our flooring installer suggested we should attach felt pads or something similar underneath.

For that, you’d normally want regular chairs with four legs. However, we actually prefer cantilever chairs. These usually have a larger contact area with the floor than just four legs, right?

There is a huge selection available. How can a layperson tell which ones are any good? Do you have good experiences with certain manufacturers or models?

They should be black leather with legs in brushed stainless steel look, or something similar.

I would always go to a furniture store and try out the chairs before buying. What’s the point of the most stylish chairs if no one enjoys sitting on them?

Generally correct. However, we do not live in a large city. The selection here is very limited to non-existent.
Also, even when I try sitting in the store, I still have no experience from others.

Then I’ll just get in the car and drive to one. You don’t have to buy everything right on your doorstep...

Oh man.
It seems to be different for you, but here I still have a lot to do in the house. Just getting in the car and driving there is a day trip. There are more important things to do.

In my opinion, cantilever chairs are only available either at designer prices or in the quality category of "cheap imitations." Usually, they have "feet" at the end and just before the curve, so they don’t really rest on the floor with the top of the tube.
