Hello everyone, I am currently in the process of putting together an Ikea Pax wardrobe and am wondering if it can be expanded modularly without much effort. My specific question is: Can you extend the Ikea Pax system modularly, meaning can you add individual components to an already assembled wardrobe or modify it without having to do extensive disassembly or major alterations?

I would appreciate your insights or experiences, as I want to keep as much flexibility as possible during the planning phase without having to take everything apart later. Thank you in advance!

I have expanded the Pax myself several times and, in my experience, it really depends on how the existing units are assembled.

If you haven’t attached it to the wall yet, it’s much easier. You can place the units side by side and securely connect them using the fastening screws. However, if the wardrobe is firmly anchored or reinforced with back panels, partial disassembly is almost unavoidable.

Important points:
- Take your time and stay calm. Rushing the assembly often leads to mistakes.
- The precise fit of the new units is crucial; misunderstandings about size make adding on significantly more difficult.
- If you’re not very experienced yet, the original Ikea connecting kits are helpful, as they are specifically designed for this purpose.

Can you share more details about your current setup? That would make it easier to provide advice.

The connections run along the vertical sides using special connector screws that fit through pre-drilled holes.

Exactly. I would like to add that most challenges when expanding Pax modularly are related to the back panels. These are usually nailed or stapled and hold everything together. If you remove them carelessly, the stability suffers.

My advice: only remove the back panels where you are making the extension. If necessary, get replacement panels to retrofit.

This way, you can minimize the effort while still maintaining a stable structure.
