Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Kallax shelving unit from IKEA and am now considering the best way to maintain it, especially whether it is appropriate to apply furniture oil for its care.

I understand that Kallax is made from particleboard with a melamine coating, but there are also versions with a wood surface and apparently options to oil or at least maintain the unit to keep it looking good longer and reduce wear.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations on whether furniture oil is suitable, or if it might actually be counterproductive? What alternatives do you know for maintaining or protecting the surfaces?

I would really appreciate practical tips or warnings about any potential risks if using oil could cause damage. Thanks in advance!

Hello Bagole,

your question makes a lot of sense, especially since it is often unclear how to treat the surface of shelves like the Kallax.

In general, the Kallax shelving unit is made of melamine-coated particleboard, which is very durable and usually does not require additional treatment with furniture oil. Furniture oil is mainly intended for solid wood, which breathes and is maintained and protected by the oil.

So if you apply regular furniture oil to the melamine-coated surface, it will probably not absorb well and could instead leave a sticky residue or cause stains.

If you have a version with a white, wood-like surface (not melamine-coated but real wood veneer), furniture oil might work in some cases — however, you should be very careful and test the oil first on an inconspicuous area.

For maintaining melamine-coated surfaces, it is usually sufficient to clean them with a damp cloth and, if needed, use special plastic care products or mild cleaning agents.

I hope this helps you!

Exactly. To answer your question clearly and objectively: furniture oil is not suitable for Kallax shelves with melamine-coated surfaces.

The melamine coating is a hard plastic layer that is resistant to moisture and oil-based products. Furniture oil cannot be absorbed by such surfaces and may instead attract dirt or leave unwanted residues.

If you have a version with a solid wood veneer, furniture oil may be possible, but generally, it is recommended to use products specifically designed for that purpose.

Alternatively, it is advisable to maintain the Kallax with a soft, slightly damp cloth and use mild, neutral cleaning agents if necessary.

Care waxes or specially formulated furniture care products for coated wood surfaces are recommended rather than oils.

Hello Bagole,

I’d like to organize my response a bit and give you a short care “mini-tutorial”:

1. Material check: Kallax is usually made of particleboard with a melamine coating. This means the surface is sealed and very durable.

2. Why not use oil? Furniture oil penetrates open wood pores to nourish and moisturize the wood. On a sealed melamine surface, this doesn't work – the oil stays on the surface and can cause stains or streaks.

3. Cleaning: A damp cloth, preferably with a mild cleaner free of harsh chemicals, is usually sufficient. Then let it dry.

4. Care: If really necessary, you can use special plastic or furniture care products designed for melamine-coated furniture. These maintain the surface without damaging it.

5. Alternative for real wood veneer: If your Kallax shelf has a real wood veneer surface, you can cautiously use furniture oil. It’s important to test it first in an inconspicuous area, work the oil in well, and immediately wipe off any excess.

Summary: Furniture oil is not recommended for a standard Kallax unit with melamine coating. Simple cleaning and care products from furniture stores are enough.

I hope this helps you decide!

Thanks for the detailed tips! My version is actually the standard model with a melamine coating, so it sounds like furniture oil is really not suitable.

I’m also curious: what happens if oil is applied to such a surface anyway? Does it absorb into the surface, or does it just leave a greasy residue? Are there any risks that the shelf could be permanently damaged?

I read somewhere that some people still use oils or waxes to create a sort of protective layer – is that nonsense, or are there cases where that actually works?

I like to go into detail: Furniture oil is basically intended for porous wooden furniture, where it soaks deep into the fibers and either hardens there or at least binds moisture.

A melamine-coated surface like the Kallax shelf is a closed, smooth plastic surface. Therefore, the oil does not soak in. Instead, it can leave a sticky or greasy film that does not dry and attracts dirt.

The surface usually doesn’t get damaged directly, since melamine is very durable and resistant to acids and oils. However, a removed oily film can be difficult to clean, and dissolved oil residues attract dust and dirt.

Another risk is that stubborn oil residues can cause stains or require aggressive cleaning agents to remove, which could damage the surface.

My advice: If oil does get onto the surface, quickly wipe it off with a dry cloth and then gently clean the area with mild soapy water.

Very important: If you actually have a solid wood version or the surface is treated differently, please let us know exactly what type of surface it is and how heavily the shelf is used. Only then can we recommend the proper care!
