ᐅ Can the KALLAX unit be securely installed as a partition wall?

ROBINFLOHello everyone,
I am currently planning to use an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit as a room divider in my apartment to visually and spatially separate an area. However, I am wondering if the KALLAX can be securely fixed as a partition so that it stands stable and can withstand long-term loads.
Specifically, I am interested in whether the shelf must be attached to the wall with fasteners, or if there are ways to set it up freestanding while preventing it from tipping over. What experiences do you have with using KALLAX as a room divider?
I would appreciate tips on safe installation and advice on which measures are necessary to effectively prevent tipping or sliding.
Thanks in advance!

For secure anchoring of the KALLAX as a partition wall, it should always be fixed to the wall or ceiling. The small-sized plug-in modules are not load-bearing enough to stand stable on their own due to their own weight or applied loads.
It is recommended to use additional fastening elements, such as metal brackets that secure the shelf, or tension cables running from the ceiling to the top of the shelf. Combining this with floor fixing or a sturdy back panel also significantly improves stability.

I would like to share a brief guide on how I securely fixed a KALLAX unit as a partition wall:
1. Assemble the shelving unit according to the instructions.
2. Place the unit against the wall so that the back panel is flush with it.
3. Screw a metal angle bracket at the top of the unit into the wall (use appropriate wall anchors and screws depending on the wall material).
4. At the bottom, you can either attach angle brackets as well or equip the unit with non-slip pads to prevent it from sliding.
5. For extra stability, I also attached a thin board as a backing panel – this increases resistance to tipping.
Common mistakes: Relying solely on the unit’s weight; due to its design, the shelving unit is relatively narrow and can tip over easily if just placed without fixing.

So, I set up my KALLAX as a room divider. Obviously, without screws it wouldn’t be very stable—it’s not really designed for that purpose. 😅
I just used some furniture brackets, which I fixed to the wall at the top on the back of the shelving unit. I also put some carpet pads underneath, and suddenly it stands really well.
I completely agree with that! I would find it too risky to leave it freestanding, especially if there are children or pets in the house. 🙂

You can only secure it properly by fixing it to the wall with brackets or tension rods

A KALLAX as a partition wall? Great idea! 👍
Just a tip: Make sure you secure it not only at the top but also at the bottom. Otherwise, with stronger pressure or bumping, even when adults pass through, there’s a risk it could tip over.
Exactly, with a bit of foresight and a good base, it will be stable. I used small floor protectors that prevent slipping on laminate flooring, and the shelf stands rock solid. 😊
