I plan to use an IKEA Kallax shelving unit but would like to double the backing to better protect it from damage. My specific question is: Is it practical to add a second, thin backing panel to the Kallax shelf for extra protection? I am mainly interested in whether this makes sense in terms of stability and how to do it best without limiting the shelf’s functionality. Has anyone had experience with this or can offer tips on whether it’s possible and which materials would be suitable? Thanks!

Yes, you can do that. Simply screw or staple a thin MDF board or plywood behind it. It should become more stable and prevent sagging. Just make sure to use the correct dimensions and fasten it securely so nothing wobbles.

For clarification: The back panel of the Kallax is usually made of thin hardboard or pressboard, which in the standard version provides very little structural support. Adding a second thin panel (e.g., 3–4 mm MDF) definitely increases stability and protects against warping or breaking. It is important to attach the second back panel evenly over the entire surface to avoid tension. Screws and wood glue work well; alternatively, small nails or staples can be used if the back panel should not be permanently damaged. The usable shelf space at the front is barely affected since the back panel is recessed. Material choice: MDF offers a smooth surface, while plywood is more robust and resistant to moisture. Ease of handling speaks in favor of a second back panel of the same dimensions.

That reassures me, thank you! I was worried whether the shelf would still stand properly afterward or maybe become crooked. Does anyone have experience with whether doubling up makes attaching it to the wall more difficult? I’d rather not risk the load shifting and the shelf becoming unstable.

As long as you secure the thicker back panels with the original screws or additional fasteners, nothing changes in that regard. Wall mounting is actually more secure because the back panel becomes more stable and everything holds better.
