Most of the time, the residential ventilation system for controlled living space ventilation is located in the utility room, basement, or attic. I did not plan for a heat recovery system, as space in the utility room is limited. However, I have a shed directly next to the planned house (wall to wall). Is there any reason not to install the ventilation system outside the house? One positive side effect would be that the device would definitely not be heard. At what point do the lengths of the ventilation ducts become a problem?

If your shed is heated, then it’s not a problem. You just need to consider how the installation passes into the building.
If your shed, which I assume is unheated, then this won’t work. The devices are designed to operate at room temperature. The same applies to the pipes. You would need to insulate them at considerable expense.
The device itself would also need insulation. And at this point, your admittedly good idea becomes uneconomical. The device would have to be placed inside some kind of enclosure to allow access. Usually, this is not something you can do yourself.

@PhiIipp Thank you very much for the quick and clear response. So the device will be installed inside the apartment.

If your shed is at least 10 degrees Celsius (50°F), it is generally not a problem for the mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery. The only issue you need to address is the condensation on the pipes (in the building’s thermal envelope and possibly also the intake and exhaust ducts), which you can manage with Armaflex insulation.

By the way, there are also mechanical ventilation units designed for ceiling installation (about 30 cm (12 inches) for the unit plus approximately 5 cm (2 inches) for the suspension). So, if you don’t have much wall space, this might be a suitable option for you.

@i_b_n_a_n relocated his technical room into a separate small building, if I remember correctly.

That's correct. However, this room is very well insulated except for the door, even though it is not part of the thermal envelope. It is not heated, but all the technical equipment is housed there, so it never gets completely cold...
