Hello everyone,
I have a question that has been on my mind for a while and I’m hoping for your advice: Is it possible to retrofit the IKEA Pax wardrobe system with integrated lighting—not just the usual stick-on LED strips, but a permanently installed lighting solution built directly into the wardrobe?

I’m referring to a technically clean and durable solution, ideally with its own power connection or operating via the regular electrical supply, and possibly activated by a motion sensor or a switch.

Has anyone done this before or can offer tips on what options are available, how complex such a retrofit is, and whether it requires modifications to the cabinet structure?

Thanks and best regards!

Hey Jarle, that’s a really great question! 😊 I installed LED strips in my Pax myself and can say from experience: yes, it definitely works! I only attached LED strips that turn on via a motion sensor. It works really well and adds a lot of convenience. The idea of a fixed lighting installation sounds even more professional, of course.

Many have their wardrobes modified by an electrician so that the cables are routed directly through the cabinet body. This makes everything look much neater! Don’t get discouraged—it's doable, and the effort is definitely worth it!

Hello Jarle,

to answer your question thoroughly: Yes, Pax wardrobe SYSTEMS can generally be upgraded with built-in lighting. IKEA itself offers several light strips that are relatively easy to install, such as LED light strips with integrated power supply and plugs.

If you want to carry out a separate, more professional installation, I recommend checking whether your Pax wardrobe has an opening through which cables can be routed. In such cases, fixed wiring with switches or motion sensors can even be installed. You should pay attention to proper wiring and safety aspects.

Although there is no “plug & play” solution from IKEA itself for complete fixed installations, modifications are quite common and feasible.

Adding lighting to Pax afterwards? Sure. Connect a power supply, run cables through the back panel or cabinet body, install LEDs with a switch or motion sensor. Done.

I have upgraded my Pax wardrobe with the original IKEA LED light strips. These are designed for permanent installation and can be wired in. You should use the cable management openings in the cabinet or drill your own if needed. Motion sensors are available on the accessory market.

Clarification on Retrofitting Lighting in Pax:
- IKEA offers light strips with connection cables that can be easily installed using plug connectors.
- For a permanent installation, it is recommended to use cable glands; most Pax units have pre-made openings.
- Depending on the model, motion sensors and switches can be wired internally or connected externally.
- The power consumption of the LED lights is low, so a standard power supply from IKEA is sufficient; no changes to the house electrical system are necessary.

Recommendation: Perform the installation calmly using appropriate tools, or otherwise consult a professional.
