Hello,

the main point is already clear from the title. This is an old rental apartment, built in 1928. The original floor was a plank floor – it is still there but in poor condition because in the 1970s (?) it was covered with linoleum, so that is what is currently on the floor. Its style and color are unacceptable, hence the idea:

To install laminate flooring over the linoleum. Can the linoleum basically be used as impact sound insulation? Or should the linoleum be removed first, then an impact sound insulation layer placed on the planks, and laminate flooring installed on top?

Hello "AndreasPlü".
If we completely set aside the aspect of impact sound insulation, there is nothing against the installation technique of laying laminate flooring elements as a floating floor directly on old linoleum.

When installing flooring layers on top of each other, it is very likely that the interior doors will no longer close properly.
The spacer washers on the hinges are usually not sufficient.
For wooden doors, you could plane the bottom edge.
For modern doors made of coated particleboard, to avoid chipping the veneer, tape both sides of the cut area and carefully shorten it with a circular saw.
In a rental apartment, be sure to discuss this with the landlord first.

The initial questions were
a) "Can linoleum practically be used as impact sound insulation?" or
b) "Remove it first and then install impact sound insulation on the floorboards before laying laminate on top?"
Of course, one could discuss various secondary aspects of installation endlessly and move from one related topic to another without ever reaching an end.
However, that was not requested here and is ultimately the responsibility of the party carrying out the work.
A fact-based and concise answer to the question(s) is therefore preferable to extensive speculation on unrelated topics.

So, impact sound insulation: yes or no? Sorry, that was a bit unclear.

@ Andreas:
Do not use (so-called) impact sound insulation foil!
It doesn’t make sense on any remaining elastic underlayment.
