Hello everyone,
I am currently considering expanding my Ikea Platsa shelving units and wanted to ask: Is it possible to easily extend Ikea Platsa shelves?
Specifically, I mean whether the existing modules can be connected without difficulty, for example, to turn a single row of shelves into a longer one without compromising stability or appearance.
I plan to install the system against a wall and would like to know if Ikea offers any official options for this or if it mainly relies on DIY solutions. It would also be important to get advice on possible connectors, load capacity after extension, and whether reinforcements are needed when extending the units.
Thanks in advance for your experiences and tips!

Great questions!
Regarding the limit on the number of modules: Ikea does not officially state a strict maximum, but based on experience and recommendations, it’s often advised that once you have about 3–4 modules in a row, you should pay closer attention to installing enough wall fixings. For especially long rows, adding a central support underneath the shelf can also help prevent sagging.
As for the side panels: These are available as separate components for purchase with Platsa. They can be used at the end of each shelf or as dividing elements, providing not only a closed, tidy appearance but also increasing stability by better enclosing the shelving unit.
This is how I visually enhanced my shelf, and the side panels also give a more secure feeling that nothing will shift.

Good morning,
after gathering your feedback, I will start working on the extension. If anyone has specific recommendations for preferred fasteners or tips on installation, feel free to share!
Thanks again to everyone for the helpful advice; it really helped me better assess the feasibility.

As a supplement to your question regarding fasteners, I recommend the following approach:
- Purchase the official connector sets for Platsa from Ikea, as they are designed for the side panels and ensure the correct load capacity.
- Pay close attention to the plastic connectors clicking audibly into place when inserted – only then is the connection secure.
- When joining the modules, position them exactly at the same height and check with a spirit level before tightening the screws.
- If you set up the modules on a slightly uneven floor, I recommend adjustable feet or washers to ensure everything stands at right angles.
If you follow these tips, you will have a very secure and visually appealing extension!
