I am currently organizing my small home workshop and have been considering whether IKEA Hemnes shelves could serve as a storage and organization solution in this setting. My main question is: Can IKEA HEMNES shelves, which are originally designed for living spaces, be used practically and effectively for workshop organization? I am particularly interested in aspects such as stability, adaptability, storage capacity, and the ability to store tools and small parts in an organized and secure way. Has anyone had experience using these shelves in a similar environment or can explain the advantages and disadvantages in more detail? Additionally, it would be helpful to know how the HEMNES series compares to other shelving solutions in terms of load capacity and modularity, especially under workshop conditions.
When using Hemnes shelving units in your workshop, I recommend the following approach:
1. Analyze workshop items: Check which tools and materials you want to store, focusing on weight and dimensions.
2. Consider load capacity: Individual shelves should not permanently hold more than 25–30kg (55–66 lbs) to avoid warping.
3. Apply additional protection: A clear polyurethane sealant on the surfaces protects the wood from moisture and oils while preserving its natural appearance.
4. Use suitable boxes: IKEA offers VARIERA-style boxes that fit perfectly with Hemnes shelving—they come in various sizes, allowing for organized storage.
5. Add hooks or small containers: External attachments (magnetic strips, hooks) can be useful for frequently used tools, since the shelves themselves offer limited flexibility.
Avoid placing heavy metal parts directly on the shelves. For heavy equipment, install sturdier metal shelving units in the workshop.

Does anyone know about specific protective measures (such as paint or coating) that can be applied to shelves to make them more resistant to typical workshop wear? For a workshop environment, sealing with a clear polyurethane varnish is recommended. This protects wood from moisture, dirt, and oil residues. Alternatively, there are wood oils with dirt-repellent properties; although they are less durable, they still improve the surface. Before treatment, lightly sanding the surface helps to enhance adhesion.
I do not recommend paint, as it often has lower resistance to mechanical stress and can chip unattractively.

The IKEA HEMNES shelves can definitely be used for workshop organization, but with clear limitations.I generally agree with this. I would like to add that the value for money is very good for a hobby workshop. They are not suitable for heavy loads or industrial workshops, but for home use they are often an attractive and visually appealing solution.
The dimensions of the shelves are practical; they fit well into smaller rooms and can be easily combined with standardized boxes and containers. They can also be modified with some basic DIY skills—such as adding extra drawer systems or dividers.
