Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to expand my existing Ikea Brimnes wardrobes with additional modules to create more storage space. My question is whether this is really as straightforward as it seems, without running into issues with stability or assembly. More specifically: Can Ikea Brimnes wardrobes simply be extended by adding more units side by side or connected extensions? Or are there limitations regarding the connectors, hanging systems, or possibly the material load capacity that need to be considered?
I would really appreciate concrete experiences or tips, especially from those who have already done this themselves. Thank you!

Is it possible to expand Ikea Brimnes cabinets simply by adding more units side by side or by connecting extension pieces?Yes, it is possible. You can place the modules next to each other and securely connect them using the included connectors. The stability is ensured when assembled correctly.

Or are there any restrictions regarding the connectors, the mounts, or perhaps the material load capacity that need to be considered?Basically, the Brimnes wardrobe is designed so that multiple units can be combined. The following points are important:
- The connectors, usually screw fasteners with dowels, must be installed completely and correctly to prevent any instability.
- Weight and load should be distributed across the individual modules. The carcass is made of particleboard with a foil coating, and the load capacity per shelf is about 15 kg (33 lbs).
- For wall mounting, each individual element must be properly secured, as the connections between the wardrobes alone do not bear the weight.
Recommendation: It is better to assemble the wardrobes separately and fix them side by side logically using the connecting parts. If you want a continuous front, the doors need to be properly adjusted.
I would be interested in knowing how many modules you plan to combine exactly. Does this also change the room height or depth?

- The Brimnes modules can be easily connected using the supplied joining fittings.
- Each module still needs to be secured individually, especially if the unit is wall-mounted.
- For taller combinations, additional stabilizing anchors or mounting supports are recommended.
Incorrect installation can lead to warping or damage over time. I recommend carefully following Ikea’s instructions and using a spirit level and clamps if necessary.

1. Preparation: Check the individual module types (e.g., wardrobe, chest of drawers) for their dimensions and door opening direction.
2. Assembly: Put the modules together separately, screw them firmly, and pay attention to the order when attaching the connecting pieces.
3. Connection: Use the original connecting fittings that are part of the Brimnes system. They ensure a secure hold between the individual units.
4. Wall mounting: Don’t forget to fasten each module individually to the wall, especially for floor-to-ceiling cabinets.
5. Doors and fronts: Check whether the doors open and close smoothly after assembly. This is important for multi-unit combinations.
Common mistakes:
- Not fully tightening the connecting fittings
- Uneven weight distribution
- Simply placing modules side by side without screwing them together
Conclusion: With patience during assembly, an extension is easily achievable. It’s best to measure the space carefully beforehand and consider using additional support rails or stabilizers if needed.
