gustavleo12 Aug 2015 14:07Hello everyone, I am considering whether it is possible to equip IKEA Brimnes furniture, especially wardrobes and dressers, with casters to make them more flexible to move around the room. Do you think this is technically feasible without negatively affecting stability or design? Has anyone had experience with this, perhaps which casters are suitable or how to best retrofit the furniture? It is especially important to me that the casters are strong enough to bear the weight and that the furniture is not permanently damaged. Thanks for your advice!
In principle, BRIMNES furniture can be fitted with casters. You should choose sturdy casters with locking brakes, which you attach to the underside. It’s best to screw them into the wood or the base panel, depending on which version you have. Make sure the load capacity is suitable. The design is slightly affected, but the flexibility increases significantly.
Hello gustavleo, your question is well asked and brings up an interesting topic! The BRIMNES series is often made of particleboard with a melamine coating, which can be retrofitted with casters, but there are some limitations: - Stability can be affected if the furniture does not rest evenly or if the casters themselves are not of good quality. - It is important to choose casters with a high load capacity and a wide base to distribute the pressure. - Installation is best done with pre-drilled holes to avoid damaging the material. Some users also recommend so-called furniture glides with casters for better support. - Another tip is to use casters with brakes so the furniture does not roll unintentionally later on. If you plan to move the furniture regularly, this is definitely a practical solution! If you like, I can explain in more detail how to best prepare the installation and which tools are useful.
Hey gustavleo, that sounds like a great project! 🙂 I’ve personally modified BRIMNES dressers with transparent casters, which has the advantage of being almost invisible while still rolling very quietly on both carpet and hardwood floors. However, it’s really important to use casters that can support the weight, otherwise it won’t be enjoyable. Give it a try—especially for smaller pieces of furniture, it really makes sense! Good luck and feel free to share your results!

Additionally, the installation should be done using metal plates or special adapter plates to avoid weakening the furniture material. For BRIMNES, reinforced bottom panels are also usually helpful—they can be screwed underneath the original bottom panel to increase stability. In short: casters are possible, but only with careful installation to ensure long-lasting functionality and safety.
