Hello everyone, I’m currently considering whether I can use the Pax wardrobe system from IKEA to create a sort of walk-in closet. My idea is to combine several PAX units or wardrobes to define a space where I can comfortably organize my clothes. I’m wondering if it’s actually practical to use PAX modules as the basis for a walk-in closet. What kind of space can I realistically expect, and how do stability and design options look? Has anyone here planned or completed something like this? I’d appreciate any tips as well as critical experiences.

I find the idea of using Pax as a walk-in closet interesting and can understand your concerns about stability and flexibility.

From my own experience: we once arranged Pax units almost like a small partition wall, but placed directly against the walls. I can see that if you position them freely in the room, a stable connection between the modules is essential. Perhaps special connectors or custom-built frames to hold the Pax units together could help.

Regarding flexibility, I think Pax is more suitable for a solution that is mostly fixed initially, since modifications would mainly involve changing doors and interior fittings during any remodeling.

I’m curious about your timeline and which room you are planning this for. Room height, width, and access can significantly affect possibilities and might open up additional options.

That’s the crucial point. PAX is not designed as a freestanding modular system. Without securing it to the wall, it lacks the necessary stability, especially for a freestanding, walk-in structure.

You should also consider whether a custom-built wardrobe with frames and stability profiles might be more practical if flexibility and stability are priorities.

Additionally, the architectural aspect should not be underestimated: wardrobes used as room dividers take up considerable floor space, often leading to a shortage of valuable living area.

Still, PAX is attractive in terms of price and modularity – it all comes down to compromises.

This is very helpful and moves me forward. I wanted to know exactly how practical the construction is without wall mounting.

I will revise my plans accordingly to connect PAX units at least to walls, recesses, or similar structures. I might also look for elements I can use as a back panel or additional frame.

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to share their perspectives! This thread has really brought me clarity.
