Hello everyone, I am planning to redesign my apartment slightly and have been looking at the IKEA Platsa system. Specifically, I am interested in the possibility of using the PLATSA units with open shelves as a kind of accent feature in the living space.

My question is whether open shelves in the PLATSA system are suitable not only for organizing the rooms functionally but also for creating design accents that add atmosphere and individuality to the space.

I am particularly curious about how the appearance changes with open shelving, what design options are available, and whether it is practically advisable to use the system this way—compared to closed units that might offer less “airiness” within the furniture.

Do you have any experience with PLATSA combined with open shelves as an accent feature? What tips or limitations should I consider? Thank you in advance!

PLATSA with open shelves works well as an accent when you use decorations and books. Make sure to evenly distribute the items so it doesn’t look cluttered. For more structure, separately closed compartments work well as a contrast.

That is an interesting point, as open shelves undoubtedly create a lighter spatial effect and allow for creative design. However, I consider this not only from an aesthetic perspective but also raise a critical question: How do you prevent it from looking cluttered quickly?

Open shelves have the drawback that dust, mess, and filler items are immediately visible. A sense of style can quickly be lost if the surface maintenance is neglected.

I would recommend designing with a clear structure, possibly using a color scheme and small, selected decorative elements. Additionally, closed compartments could serve as hiding places for less attractive items.

The real advantage of PLATSA lies in its modularity and adaptability: How do you plan to integrate the system into the overall context of your home? Only as a design feature, or also as a practical storage solution?

To systematically evaluate the use of IKEA PLATSA with open shelving as a design feature, here is a brief guide on what to consider:

- Planning: Position the open shelves to create focal points in the room without appearing too dominant. For example, place them where natural light enters.
- Content selection: Arrange decorative items, plants, and books by color and style groups. Consistent color tones enhance the design effect.
- Maintenance: Open shelves collect dust more quickly. Regular cleaning is essential to maintain the desired appearance.
- Combination: Depending on the room’s furnishing, combining open shelves with closed compartments can be beneficial. This increases both functionality and design impact.

Common mistakes:
- Overloading shelves, which undermines the design.
- Inappropriate items that don’t match the style.

In summary: The better you plan and utilize each surface, the more effectively you can use PLATSA as a design feature. The system’s modularity is a major advantage here.

This is very important. For open shelving in PLATSA, I recommend the following approach:

- Use containers or boxes of the same or similar size to create visual consistency.
- Stick to a limited color palette for the items to create a calm atmosphere.
- Optimize the lighting: indirect LED lighting can greatly enhance the ambience and help conceal cluttered corners.
- Use doors or flaps on some parts of the system to have closed storage for things that might disrupt the overall look.

Technically, you should also consider the weight of decorative items, as the IKEA PLATSA shelves have limited load capacity. Avoid overloading to prevent deformation.

Do you already have a specific location in mind? Depending on that, I recommend different material qualities and a deliberate selection of open and closed elements.

Summary: For ambience, a mix of open design and structured storage – especially with PLATSA – is the best solution.
