Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to install my new Ikea Metod kitchen and have an important question: Is it possible to securely fix Ikea Metod cabinets to a tiled floor?

The floor in my kitchen is made of glazed, quite hard tiles, and I want to avoid anchors breaking out or the cabinets becoming unstable over time. Are there special fastening techniques, suitable anchors, or types of screws that work particularly well? Or would it be better to build an additional substructure?

I would appreciate practical tips based on real experience or if anyone has installed cabinets on tiled floors and wants to share their recommendations. Thanks in advance!

Thanks in advance for all the suggestions.

Some background: My tiles are standard ceramic tiles laid over a cement screed, so not a drywall but a very solid subfloor. The wall behind is solid plaster on brick masonry.

I’m mainly planning the fastening of the base cabinets, as I’m concerned they might shift when being set in place, which could affect stability. We will, of course, attach the wall cabinets directly to the wall.

Could someone advise whether I should screw the base cabinets to the floor at all, or if the original feet from Ikea are sufficient? How do you handle this with a tiled floor?

Also, a drilling guide as Nabla64 suggested would be very helpful!

Hello Tauge,

great that you added some information about the substrate, that makes the recommendations clearer. Here is my brief guide for safe drilling on tiles:

- Tools: glass drill bit or special tile drill bit for the initial cut.
- First, use the tile drill bit at the intended spot, slowly and with light pressure to avoid cracking the glaze. To make it easier, you can stick a piece of tape on the drilling spot so the drill bit slips less.
- After penetrating the tile, switch to a masonry or concrete drill bit and drill about 3-5 cm (1¼-2 inches) deep into the wall behind the tile.
- Always remove drilling dust, preferably with compressed air or a vacuum cleaner, before inserting the anchor.
- Use appropriate anchors, such as heavy-duty anchors or special tile anchors for brick walls.

Regarding base cabinets on tiled floors: usually, properly adjusting the original Ikea feet is enough.

If the floor is level and the cabinets are aligned correctly, you normally don’t need to fix the base cabinets additionally. However, it is advisable to connect the cabinets to each other (Ikea provides connecting fittings for this) to create a stable unit and prevent any movement.

Do you have any height differences or uneven spots in the floor? Then an additional substructure might help, but with a cement screed floor this is often unnecessary.

Hello Tauge,

I fully trust your planning and can say from personal experience that Ikea Metod cabinets can be mounted very securely on tile floors – you just have to be confident and go for it!

What helped me was setting up the cabinets first without much screwing, leveling everything carefully, and then adjusting the feet very precisely. When everything fits well, you can feel that the cabinets stand as one solid unit, especially when you connect the base cabinets together.

Don’t be afraid to drill – drill calmly and with the right drill bit, and boom, the cabinets will hold firmly.

If you have any doubts, simply realign everything carefully and, if needed, secure the feet with non-slip rubber pads to prevent slipping. This provides extra stability and protects the tiles!

Enjoy the assembly – you’ve got this!

In summary, I would like to add some facts and specific recommendations here:

- Tile floors are generally durable and provide a solid base for kitchen base cabinets, provided the tiles are professionally installed and intact.

- Attaching the Ikea Metod base cabinets to the floor is not generally required. Stability is achieved through adjustable feet and by connecting the cabinets to each other.

- Wall mounting for wall cabinets has higher requirements and requires suitable anchors (e.g., Fischer SXR) and screws, especially when mounting on brickwork behind tiles.

- If the tiles are damaged or the floor is uneven, a special substructure can be useful; otherwise, it is technically not necessary.

- Drilling into tiles requires precise work and appropriate drill bits: first a tile drill bit at low speed, then a masonry drill bit for the underlying wall.

- For screws and anchors in brick, always choose anchors matched to the specific material; universal anchors are not recommended.

- Finally, proper installation and securely connecting the cabinets are essential factors for safety.

These points are based on extensive professional handyman and kitchen fitter experience and provide reliable guidance.
