ᐅ Can I repurpose Ikea Hemnes shelves for outdoor furniture storage?

Hello everyone,

I have the following question: I would like to know if Ikea Hemnes shelves – specifically the free-standing shelves from the Hemnes series – can be repurposed effectively to store garden furniture or garden items such as cushions, smaller tools, or plant pots in a weather-protected way.

My main concern is durability and load capacity under the often significantly changing weather conditions, such as rain, sunlight, and humidity. I wonder if the typical finish and wood quality of the Hemnes shelves can reasonably withstand these outdoor conditions or if I might encounter long-term issues like warping, mold, or chipping.

I am also interested if anyone has experience improving these shelves for outdoor use through additional treatments or modifications.

In short: Can I use Ikea Hemnes shelves safely, or at least with certain precautions, for garden storage purposes, or would it be better to choose specially weather-resistant outdoor shelving instead?

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

The shelves were partially covered, but not fully protected.

This is exactly the point where many pieces of furniture start having issues. Partially covered usually means that moisture can still enter due to drafts and splashing water. Therefore, my recommendation is that some kind of shelter is almost always necessary, even for treated furniture.

Additionally, it might be worth considering the use of special garden shelf covers, multilayer wood preservatives, or moisture-resistant treatments.

Last year, I used a Hemnes shelf on the balcony. Since it was covered and sheltered from the wind, the shelf has shown no visible damage so far. I treated it with a light oil finish beforehand and use it only for dry garden items.

Conclusion: It works if you protect it and don’t leave it out in constant rain.

Use Hemnes shelves outdoors only if they are properly treated and protected. Otherwise, it is not a good idea.

Hello everyone,

I would like to add a practical approach in case someone actually wants to use Hemnes shelves outdoors:

1. Remove paint / lightly sand all visible wood surfaces
2. Apply a high-quality, water-repellent exterior wood stain several times at intervals
3. Seal the most important edges (bottom and back) with suitable silicone sealant
4. Elevate with feet or rubber pads to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom edge
5. Set up under a carport, balcony cover, or similar shelter
6. Regular maintenance: re-oil or re-stain after about one year

Common mistakes:

- Direct ground contact without protection
- Use in open rain without a roof
- Missing inspections after severe weather

Without these measures, the shelf will sooner or later get damaged.

What you can do to prepare the shelves for outdoor use:

1. Remove the interior finish or at least sand the surfaces thoroughly.
2. Apply several coats of wood preservative or oil with UV protection, certified for exterior use.
3. Seal the roof edges and bottom edges with sealing tape or silicone to minimize water ingress.
4. Place the cabinet in a sheltered location, for example under a canopy.

Thank you very much for the detailed instructions! One question: How much effort does this kind of preparation usually require? And does it need to be repeated regularly, or is once every few years enough?

Alternatively, could I use Hemnes shelves outdoors only temporarily, for example during summer for a few months, and then bring them back inside? Or would even that short exposure significantly damage them?

Hello Alper,

the pretreatment is moderately to highly time-consuming, depending on how thorough you are and how large the shelves are. Expect at least half a day’s work for sanding, plus two to three coats of stain or oil, each requiring several hours of drying time.

You should repeat the treatment roughly every year if the shelves are exposed directly to sun and rain. With good protection and maintenance, you can extend the interval to 2–3 years, but it’s important not to leave it unchecked.

Using them outdoors temporarily in summer is usually feasible. Much depends on the location—wind, rain, humidity. If the spot is favorable (covered, dry) and you sand and apply oil once, you can use the shelves outside for a few months without expecting major damage. After winter, store them indoors, check the surfaces as needed, and refresh the treatment.
