Hello everyone, I am currently considering replacing the wooden doors of my Ikea Pax wardrobe with glass doors. In other words, is it generally feasible to swap the existing wooden doors for glass ones on your own?

My main concern is the actual installation: Do you need special tools or technical know-how to remove the doors, install the glass doors, and adjust the hinges correctly? Are there any structural or safety issues to be aware of, since glass is significantly heavier and more fragile than wood?

I would like to do this without professional help but still ensure the doors fit properly without sticking or rattling. Does anyone have experience with this or any tips on the exact process and potential pitfalls? Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

Yes, in principle, you can replace Ikea Pax wooden doors with glass doors without professional help. The doors are usually modular, and attaching the hinges is similar.

Important:
- Glass doors often come with their own hinge sets designed specifically for the weight and the safety glass, which is usually triple-glazed safety glass.
- Tools: Phillips screwdriver, possibly an Allen key, and a spirit level to align the doors.
- Safety: Handle glass carefully and lift the doors with two people if possible, as glass can break if dropped.

There are often special hangers or clips for glass doors that you may need to purchase together with the doors, as the mounting system can differ slightly. You should check in advance whether your Pax frames are compatible with these hinges.

When removing the doors, be careful not to loosen the hinges too much, as the door can become misaligned or the mounts damaged. Door adjustments are usually made via screws on the hinges, allowing you to fine-tune height, depth, and lateral positioning.

All in all: with some patience and careful handling, this is doable, especially if you have basic DIY skills.

This is an important point. I would even add that you shouldn’t just install any glass door simply because the size fits.

- Glass is considerably heavier than wood or particleboard panels. Therefore, the existing hinge might not be able to support the extra weight without issues.
- Additionally, the frame structure of the PAX system is designed for certain door types, and in some cases, the way hinges attach to the door frame differs for glass doors.

That’s why: without the correct replacement parts or the original Ikea glass doors, swapping them can pose a safety risk. DIY modifications using other glass doors or homemade components can be dangerous.

Also: what about seals or bump protection? Glass is more prone to damage if the door closes against hard edges.

In short: as long as you use the original Ikea PAX glass doors including hinges, the process is safer. Simply swapping doors without this technical compatibility, I consider risky.

The good news: You don’t need any special or expensive tools to change the doors on an Ikea Pax wardrobe. A standard Phillips screwdriver is the most important tool.

I did it myself and followed these steps:
- Carefully unhinge the door by loosening the hinges on the cabinet side
- Fit the new doors with the corresponding hinges
- Align the doors and mount them onto the wardrobe
- Adjust the doors using the screws on the hinges (adjustable in height and sideways)

What I recommend:
- Take your time to avoid damaging the glass doors
- Ideally, change the doors with two people, especially due to the weight and risk of glass breakage

No advanced expertise is required, but patience and careful work are absolutely necessary.

The effort is worth it because the glass doors greatly enhance the appearance of any Pax wardrobe.

Good point, but I think it’s important not to be too strict about this. Of course, original Ikea doors with matching hinges offer the best fit and safety.

However, if you have some DIY skills, you can definitely get creative, for example with suitable glass panes or even plexiglass, which is lighter and more impact-resistant.

I agree that real glazing requires careful work, but why not try something on your own?

- Cutting glass yourself or having it cut
- Adjusting or modifying the frame if necessary

This often sounds like a horror story in forums. But at least with smaller doors and responsible handling, there is definitely room for flexibility.

If you’re confident and work carefully, you can save money or create custom designs that Ikea does not offer.
