Hello everyone, I am currently considering painting an IKEA Malm piece of furniture myself to make it more personalized. My main question is: Can I paint Malm furniture on my own without making mistakes, even though I have no professional experience with painting? What should I especially pay attention to in order to achieve the smoothest and most durable finish possible? I would really appreciate tips regarding preparation, the right type of paint and tools, as well as any common pitfalls to avoid. Thanks in advance!

Sand everything, prime carefully, and work meticulously. Don’t rush, or mistakes will happen. Use high-quality acrylic paints and good rollers. Apply several thin coats.
Done.

I can only agree with Luke44.

Also, Malm furniture is not designed for painting, so there is no guarantee it will turn out perfectly. If you want to be completely sure, you need experience or a professional.

Hey Frederik32, I really want to encourage you to give it a try yourself! 🙂 The challenge is what makes it exciting. I painted my MALM dresser myself, and it was a lot of fun! Of course, I was a bit nervous at first, but with some patience, it works really well!

I didn’t take enough time sanding and priming, and that later caused some small bubbles and peeling.
That sounds like a valuable learning experience! Thanks for sharing! Always remember: patience is key!

Good luck!

Some people quickly turn an ambitious DIY project into a paint disaster – why not just leave the piece of furniture as it is or have it done professionally?
I think projects like this are enriching. Of course, it’s not always perfect, but everyone makes mistakes sometimes. That’s what makes it so endearing! For anyone willing to give it a try: just go for it! Don’t be afraid of mistakes. And if something goes wrong, just take a deep breath and learn from it 🙂
