I am considering repainting my Ikea Pax wardrobe doors myself because I no longer like the color. Before I start, I want to make sure I don’t damage the doors or end up with a messy finish.

Specifically, I’m wondering if it’s advisable to remove the doors completely and what kind of surface preparation is recommended. Which types of paint work best for the surfaces of the Pax doors, which I understand are usually made of MDF panels with a foil coating?

That's true. I was also concerned, but I used very fine sandpaper and worked gently. Additionally, I applied a special bonding primer from the hardware store to avoid damaging the surface.

In general, my advice is: remove the doors, clean them thoroughly (using a mild detergent, not strong solvents!), lightly sand, apply primer, and then thin coats of paint.

Looking back, I’m glad I did it myself. The result looks high-quality, and the doors were not damaged at all. Just work carefully – which is easier said than done – but definitely doable!
