Fifra45Hello everyone,
I am considering repainting my Ikea Pax wardrobe doors myself because I no longer like the color. Before I start, I want to make sure I don’t damage the doors or end up with a messy finish.
Specifically, I’m wondering if it’s advisable to remove the doors completely and what kind of surface preparation is recommended. Which types of paint work best for the surfaces of the Pax doors, which I understand are usually made of MDF panels with a foil coating?
Also, I would like to know whether it is better to use a spray gun or if painting with a brush or roller is sufficient.
Do you have any experience or tips on how to do this without damaging the doors or affecting their functionality?
Thanks in advance!

Hello,
yes, you can paint the Ikea Pax doors yourself. It is important to sand the surface thoroughly beforehand and clean it well.
A primer is recommended, especially for foil-coated surfaces. Brushes or rollers are fine; a spray gun usually provides a more even finish but is not necessary.
Removing the doors helps with handling and prevents damage to the cabinet.

There are some important points to consider when painting Ikea Pax doors.
- The doors are usually made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) with a plastic or foil coating. This coating can be challenging because it may not easily accept paint.
- Thorough cleaning and light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (around 220 grit) are essential to ensure good adhesion without damaging the surface.
- It is recommended to use a special primer designed for foil or smooth surfaces before applying the actual paint. This helps prevent peeling.
- Water-based acrylic or acrylic latex paints are suitable because they have low odor and remain fairly flexible.
- Tools: Professional painters often use spray guns for an even finish, but good results can also be achieved with brushes or foam rollers if you work carefully and apply several thin layers.
- Ideally, the doors should be removed and laid flat on a level work surface for painting to avoid drips and structural flaws.
- After painting, the doors should dry thoroughly for at least 24–48 hours before being reinstalled.
I also recommend testing on an inconspicuous area first to make sure the adhesion and finish meet your expectations.

A primer is recommended, especially for film coatings.I completely agree! If you just wash and paint the doors, ugly bubbles or cracks can appear quickly.
I once sprayed my Pax doors with a spray gun. Of course, it takes some practice, but the result was really smooth and even. You can also use a roller, but you need to take a bit more time to avoid streaks.
Remove the door, use fine sandpaper, apply a suitable primer, and then use several thin coats of paint rather than one thick layer – that works best and you don’t have to worry about damage.
Bonus tip: ventilate well and wear gloves – it makes the whole process much more comfortable.

- The doors have different finishes depending on the model, either painted or laminated. It is important to know this exactly because painted doors and laminated doors require different approaches.
- The laminate surface can be particularly sensitive. Sanding too aggressively can damage it, leaving unsightly marks.
- Therefore, I recommend starting with fine sandpaper and applying only light pressure, and looking for a suitable primer that is specifically designed for laminate surfaces.
- If you are unsure, it is a good idea to seek advice from a hardware store or specialist retailer about the products.
- And very importantly: temperature and humidity during painting are crucial to ensure the paint dries properly and no damage occurs.
For anyone completely new to this: It’s even better to fully remove the doors before painting and work on a dust-free, flat surface. This helps avoid contamination and allows for painting them flat, significantly improving the appearance.

Specifically, I am interested in whether it is advisable to completely remove the doors and what pre-treatment steps make sense.I understand your caution because Ikea Pax doors are sturdy, but their delicate surface coating can be damaged if not handled properly.

The film can be particularly sensitive. Excessive sanding can damage it.That's true. I was also concerned, but I used very fine sandpaper and worked gently. Additionally, I applied a special bonding primer from the hardware store to avoid damaging the surface.
In general, my advice is: remove the doors, clean them thoroughly (using a mild detergent, not strong solvents!), lightly sand, apply primer, and then thin coats of paint.
Looking back, I’m glad I did it myself. The result looks high-quality, and the doors were not damaged at all. Just work carefully – which is easier said than done – but definitely doable!
And don’t hesitate to ask questions if you still have uncertainties about the process.
