Hello everyone, I am planning to paint my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet fronts myself and have a few questions. Can the fronts of the Metod cabinets be treated with conventional paint without damaging the surface? Are there any special preparations I should consider to ensure even adhesion, or is a specific primer perhaps necessary? What are your thoughts on the durability and appearance compared to factory-applied paint? I am aiming for the most durable results and would appreciate tips regarding the right type of paint (acrylic, PU, etc.) as well as tools like spray guns or brushes. Thanks in advance for your insights!

Careful sanding is essential here to avoid removing too much material. Using a primer specifically designed for plastics is a must to ensure adhesion and durability. It is also recommended to clean the surface once with a mild solvent (e.g., isopropanol) before painting to prevent dust or grease from affecting the finish. For the paint, I recommend water-based acrylics, as they yellow less and are more sustainable. In my experience, a spray gun achieves a durable and even surface. Brushes can leave fine textures or runs. Finally, a clear coat also plays a role if you want to make the surface more resistant to scratches.

The Metod fronts usually have a melamine surface, which is quite smooth and durable, but also challenging when it comes to painting. That does sound a bit demanding. How high is the risk of damaging the surface too much while sanding and making the fronts unusable?

Perhaps just a strong scuffing with Scotch-Brite pads would be enough?
I'm also interested in how you handle the primer – how do I know if it's really suitable for melamine or foil coatings?
And last but not least, since you recommended acrylic paint, are there specific product recommendations or things I should look out for? Are there any application or health considerations I need to keep in mind if I want to do this inside the home?
