Gepo43Hello everyone, I am facing the challenge of planning an Ikea Metod kitchen solution in a room with unusual dimensions. Specifically, I want to know if and how Metod kitchen cabinets can be adapted for rooms that do not follow standard measurements – for example, sloped walls, niches with special depths, or height differences. I am interested in both options to have the cabinets customized directly by Ikea and DIY solutions, such as additions or custom cutting. Are there any practical experiences or tips regarding the flexibility of the modules, possible complementary products, or installation? I would appreciate detailed advice on how to solve such challenges in an elegant and functional way.

For sloped walls or niches, simple cuts to the countertops are recommended, and for the base cabinets, additions with shelves or panels. Cutting can be done yourself or by a carpenter. Unfortunately, the cabinet carcass is not custom-made.

For slanted walls or recesses, simple cuts to the countertops are recommended, and for the base cabinets, additions such as shelves or panels can be used. That is generally correct, but I would like to go into more detail: The Ikea Metod kitchen is designed with a modular system based on standard dimensions, which can make planning difficult when the room has “unusual” proportions. The carcasses themselves cannot be custom-sized precisely; they are prefabricated and only allow limited modularity in width, height, or depth.
It is important to measure the recesses or room areas exactly, then develop a good layout that works with standard carcass widths of 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 cm (8, 16, 24, 32, and 39 inches). For slanted ends or deep recesses, it is advisable to cut so-called panels (side walls that align with the cabinet front) from thinner material or use suitable trim pieces.
Countertops can be easily adjusted with a jigsaw or suitable tools. This also includes beveling the front edge, which is especially useful with slanted walls. Careful attention should also be paid to ventilation and door clearance – technical details here can quickly become problematic.
Alternatively, special inserts or internal fittings such as flexible shelves or pull-outs can be added, which Ikea sometimes sells separately to increase functionality.
It would be helpful if you could share a drawing of your room layout, so we can provide more targeted advice – for example, the type of slope, whether it’s a roof pitch or wall corner, the width and depth of the recess, etc.

You cannot precisely customize the carcasses themselves, as they are prefabricated and only allow limited modularity in width, height, or depth.Additionally: If you have truly custom dimensions or angled walls, you often need to work with a combination of IKEA standard parts and custom adjustments. A proven method is to plan the base with Metod elements and then complement them with a carpenter-made countertop that is cut to exact size. It is often useful to add special filler pieces made of MDF or plywood, which can be painted or foil-wrapped to match the kitchen’s color scheme.

A strong focus should also be placed on ventilation and door clearance – technical details can quickly become problematic here.I can confirm this from my own experience. Especially with corner solutions or cabinets placed close to the walls, you need to carefully plan so that doors and drawers can open freely without obstruction. Adjustable cabinet connectors and hinges can be used here to make small fine-tuning adjustments.
There are also tips on how to modify or omit base molding profiles yourself to compensate for different floor heights. The important thing is always to plan before the final order and ideally create as accurate a visualization as possible using the IKEA planning tool or third-party software.
In conclusion: IKEA does not offer fully custom-sized carcasses. However, with craftsmanship and additional components, you can get very close to a perfectly fitting solution.
