Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to update my furniture with IKEA pieces and have specifically set my sights on the Malm dressers. My question is: Is it easy to combine Malm dressers with other IKEA series, such as the Kallax shelving unit or the Hemnes line, without significant visual or functional issues? I want to make sure the combination looks harmonious and that any differences in dimensions, colors, or materials don’t cause unexpected problems.

Does anyone have experience with this or can provide more detailed advice on what to watch out for when mixing Malm with other series?

From an objective perspective, it can be said that IKEA product lines are generally not designed to be modular with each other. This is because each range targets different customer groups: Malm is more modern-minimalist, Hemnes is rustic-classic, and Kallax is functional with a slightly industrial look.

This clearly affects the appearance and dimensions. Some ranges, however, offer similar heights or widths, making it possible to place them side by side, but never perfectly seamless.

In practical terms, there are no technical restrictions, but from a design standpoint, combining them always involves compromises.

I combined Malm with Kallax. It was not a problem. I used white for the color. Kallax is lower, but that doesn’t bother me. Functionally, they fit well together.

I can understand that mixing different series can be a bit unsettling because, of course, you want everything to look cohesive and not feel unstable or awkward.

Toku6, do you already have a specific room or function in mind for how the furniture should work together? That can help provide more focused advice.

I once had mixed series in a living room myself and made sure that the colors related to each other and that the styles matched at least slightly. This made everything feel more harmonious.

Thanks, that sounds interesting. So functionally it works well. Besides Kallax, I have also thought about combining Malm with the Hemnes series in the bedroom. Here, I have concerns about the different types of wood and colors, since Hemnes is often white-stained or shows wood grain.

In your opinion, do they go well together, or do these two series seem too different, even if purchased in the same color variant? Has anyone had concrete experience with this?

It really depends on the exact shade and lighting conditions. The white-stained finish on Hemnes shows a noticeable grain and warm undertones, giving it character and a slightly rustic feel. Malm, on the other hand, has a smoother, uniform surface without distinct grain patterns.

If you choose the white-stained Hemnes, the difference in material appearance will be apparent, and the surfaces will feel different to the touch. This contrast can look attractive if it’s intentional, or it might feel distracting if you expect uniformity.

For a bedroom, natural wood looks are often appreciated for the warmth they bring. If you prefer a modern and minimalist style, plain white Malm without grain would be the better choice, especially for a consistent overall look.

I think this is important, since Malm and Hemnes also differ in their tactile qualities.

If you value a harmonious overall look, you could, for example, replace Hemnes handles with handleless fronts or swap Malm handles for wooden ones to visually link the two styles. Some people also use matching decorations or cushions in the same color tone to create smoother transitions.

Also keep in mind that the series are made from different materials, which affects care instructions as well as long-term behavior.
