Hello everyone,

I am considering assembling my IKEA PLATSA shelving unit without the included back panel. My main question is: Can the PLATSA units be built without the back panel without losing stability and rigidity?

I find it more visually appealing and intend to use the shelving as a room divider, so an open back would be an advantage. Does anyone have practical experience or recommendations regarding whether omitting the back panel is safe, or if it might cause issues with load-bearing capacity or resistance to twisting?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

I assembled my Platsa shelves myself without the back panel to create a more open and airy feel in the room. However, I took the following precautions:

- The unit is positioned against a solid wall and secured there with special metal brackets.
- I installed discreet metal profiles as cross braces along the edges.

This way, the stability is sufficient for my needs, and the system looks more open. Without these measures, I would not recommend leaving out the back panel.

In short: omitting the back panel is possible, but not recommended if you want to use the shelf freestanding or as a room divider. Load bearing and tipping risk increase. Fixing it securely is essential.

Without a back panel, the side stability is missing – the shelf can warp or tip over more easily.

That is absolutely correct. I would like to add that IKEA deliberately includes the back panel in PLATSA to not only increase stability but also to ensure easy assembly. It is not an oversight or just a design feature, but an essential part of the construction.

Anyone who wants to build without a back panel should definitely include other measures to stabilize it. For example, using furniture connectors on the sides or vertical reinforcements inside the shelf.

Thank you all for the very helpful answers and tips! The personal experiences are especially important to me, as they help me assess how to securely build the shelving unit.

The advice about anchoring it to the wall and the suggestion to use metal brackets are also useful. I will definitely plan for additional reinforcement and make sure to install it in a way that keeps the mounting invisible.

Thanks again, this makes the decision much easier!
