Hello everyone, I have a question that might have been asked before, but I couldn’t find a really detailed answer: Can I assemble the Billy shelves from Ikea without the back panel, using only the two side panels, the bottom panel, and the shelves? And if that is possible, what problems or limitations should I consider in this case? This is interesting for me because I want to use the shelf more flexibly in the room, without a back panel, which is usually fixed with screws. I would appreciate any tips or experiences, thank you!

Without a back panel, the shelf becomes less stable and less load-bearing. Bookshelves require lateral support. You can try it, but for heavy loads without a back panel, you should definitely install additional reinforcements. Otherwise, the shelf may easily tip over or warp.

I built a Billy without a back panel and instead secured it at the top and bottom. This works because it is stabilized from above and below. If that is not possible for you, I would strongly recommend not skipping the back panel, especially if you have many books. Otherwise, you will likely have issues with wobbling and leaning.

I don’t want to unnecessarily weaken the shelf, so what would you recommend if I want to omit the back panel?

An elegant solution is to use a thin, rigid board instead of the traditional back panel, securing it only at specific points to maintain flexibility. Additionally, metal brackets can be installed at the top and bottom to prevent twisting. Without these measures, the shelf tends to be less stable and weaker, especially if it is tall.
