Bawinfrid25 Feb 2019 08:57Hello everyone,
I am currently planning the furnishing of my bedroom and considering using the Ikea Pax system for my wardrobe. However, my main question is a bit more complex: Is it possible to combine Ikea Pax with furniture from other brands without the overall look becoming unharmonious or the functionality being affected? I am thinking about combinations in terms of materials, colors, and also the dimensions of the furniture pieces.
I am particularly interested in whether connecting Pax with similar furniture from other manufacturers is technically feasible (e.g., assembly system, mounting) and how this looks in practice. Are there any experiences or recommendations on what to watch out for so that the overall arrangement remains harmonious and does not appear like a mismatched solution?
Thanks in advance for your insights and help!

Yes, you can generally do that. It is important that the dimensions and materials are reasonably compatible. You can improve color matching yourself with accessories or paint. Technically, you should only pay attention to different fastening systems to ensure everything remains stable.
I would like to address your concern in more detail, as combining Ikea Pax with furniture from other manufacturers requires some planning:
- Dimensions: Pax systems come in fixed widths, heights, and depths. Other manufacturers often deviate from these measurements, which can result in visual and functional gaps.
- Materials & Finishes: Pax furniture is mostly made from coated particleboard. If other furniture is made from solid wood or veneered panels, the overall appearance can quickly feel mismatched. Matching colors is also challenging, as Ikea uses its own specific tones.
- Fastening: Ikea often uses proprietary assembly systems (metal rails, dowels). Other manufacturers use different standards. If you want to connect elements, you may need to find custom fastening solutions.
- Appearance: Pay attention to style, handle types, and door fronts to ensure everything fits together as seamlessly as possible. Differences in design and fittings tend to stand out noticeably.
For a harmonious combination, I recommend choosing neutral colors and using cables, concealed connecting profiles, or cover panels to visually conceal transitions. Do you already have specific other furniture brands or colors in mind?

If you want to join elements together, you may need to come up with your own connection solutions.I can only agree with that. My experience shows that it’s always possible, but some flexibility and craftsmanship are required. For example, I have often combined cabinet carcasses from Pax with open shelving units from other manufacturers. It is important here to carefully align the heights and depths.
At the same time, I recommend not only considering visual aspects but also checking the load-bearing capacity of the connections. Especially when linking shelves or cabinets, you should ensure that the construction remains stable in the long term.

If you prefer to keep the combination as simple as possible, it is advisable to choose continuous fronts or matching handle rails.
It would be interesting to know which other furniture you specifically want to include so that more targeted advice can be given.
