ᐅ Can flies enter the house through the mechanical ventilation system?

Hello everyone,

For some time now, I have noticed tiny flies in the bathroom, about the size of fruit flies. At first, I thought they might have come in from outside through the window during air ventilation and removed the flies.

We were away for a few days and kept the windows closed, but there were still some flies in the bathroom. I remove them, and the next day there are more.

So far, there have been no flies in the other rooms, but yesterday I spotted one in the living area, although it could have escaped from the bathroom.

What do you think, is it possible that they are coming in through the ventilation system?

Thanks

These could also be drain flies. They might have settled in the drainage system during the construction phase.

It’s much more likely that the flies come from the potting soil rather than from the exhaust vent of the mechanical ventilation system in the bathroom! No fly can compete with that.
That’s true, especially not the really small ones. Our exhaust regularly killed mosquitoes—I always found them when cleaning the filter.

Yes, just one in the living area.

First, I don’t have a green thumb, and second, I don’t want to have to arrange for someone to water it every time we are away.

And here is a close-up image of the fly.

It is not a fruit fly, since I also catch those when present, using the vinegar-juice-soap mixture.

Looks like a biting midge. However, they don’t enter houses. Hmm. I would simply clean all the drains and flush them with hot vinegar.

I’m not an expert, but to me, it initially looked like a common housefly. You could try flushing the drains thoroughly and maybe check any filters (perhaps something got trapped in there, which could have really damaged it or caused decay? I don’t know exactly what they look like or if that’s possible). You might also consider setting up traps (sticky traps, fruit juice or soap mixtures) or possibly using a scent they dislike, like lavender oil or something similar, but I can’t think of anything else.
