Hello everyone,

I’m wondering if the Ikea shelving system BILLY can be used outdoors, for example on a covered terrace or in a garden shed. I’m particularly interested in the practical challenges and potential issues that might arise from such use. For instance, how does the material react to moisture, temperature fluctuations, or direct sunlight? Are there any experiences regarding durability or stability when used outside?

I would appreciate any tips and advice, as I’m considering using the BILLY as storage for garden tools and books in the garden, but I know that engineered wood products often have problems outdoors.

Thank you in advance for your insights!

BILLY is not designed for outdoor use. The particleboard will swell when exposed to moisture, and the surface coating will be damaged.

If you want to use the shelf outdoors, it is better to protect it additionally with paint or a protective film. Regular covering is also advisable.

That is absolutely correct. BILLY shelves are mainly made from coated particleboard, bonded internally with melamine resin, which swells quickly when exposed to certain levels of moisture or direct rain. Even if placed under a roof, the relative humidity can vary significantly, which puts stress on the material.

In addition, UV radiation causes the visible decorative film to fade and weakens the edge bonding.

If you want to use BILLY in a garden shed, you should ensure the furniture is not exposed to direct water contact, is well ventilated, and ideally treated with an additional weatherproof varnish.

It is also important to know technically that the screws and fittings are not stainless steel, which leads to rapid corrosion outdoors.

Can you describe in more detail how your garden shed or patio cover is constructed? What is the typical humidity level there? That way I can better assess how risky this is.

I’m happy to share my experience on this: BILLY is designed for indoor use and is therefore sensitive to moisture. Damp wood will swell, and the melamine-coated surface may crack or chip over time.

Temperature fluctuations cause the material to constantly expand and contract, which can reduce stability in the long run, especially at the joints.

Direct sunlight will fade the color and can make the material brittle.

If you really want to use BILLY outdoors, it helps to protect the shelves from moisture (e.g., with a waterproof cover) and to place them in a sheltered, well-ventilated area. Additionally, sealing the edges with edge protectors or acrylic can slow down moisture penetration.

These measures will extend the durability, but the furniture will not become fully weatherproof.
