ᐅ Camera for entrance monitoring

For my new build, I want to install an outdoor camera for entrance monitoring instead of a door intercom or video door phone system. I don’t need an intercom function but want to be able to see who is at the door when needed. I also do not require continuous recording of the outdoor area. Video door stations from well-known doorbell system manufacturers are too expensive for me. The camera should be installed discreetly in the entrance canopy, similar to recessed ceiling lights. It should be possible to check who is at the door via iPhone/iPad when necessary.

What costs should I expect?
What should I consider here?

I installed the Trendnet TV-IP311PI, which is a so-called dome camera. There is also a regular version available, the Trendnet TV-IP310PI.

The price is around 170 EUR (about 180 USD), and the image quality is good. What is absolutely terrible is the firmware. However, this can be easily resolved by flashing firmware from Hikvision, as the devices are identical in design.

You can't completely hide the cameras, but with a 3 m (10 feet) overhang, you should be able to find a spot where they look relatively inconspicuous.

What would be more practical? A dome camera or a standard one?

Mounting could be on the exterior wall or on the ceiling of the entrance canopy.

Placing the dome camera directly above the area you want to monitor won't help, as it will just show the visitor from above. The camera needs to be installed at an angle. Whether this is possible depends on the building's structural conditions.

It’s best to upload a picture here with the desired camera position marked.

Here are two pictures of the construction project showing the entrance area.
I would like to have conduits (electricity and LAN) installed in the entrance canopy at the back left side (when viewed from the street), close to the house wall.
Does this work?

I would use a dome camera and install it at the end or beginning of the canopy, aiming it towards the door. In my opinion, it cannot be completely concealed.

What interests me is the personal cost-benefit analysis!

I recently realized for myself (no statistics available) that our landline number is not used, and the doorbell is only used by the postman and very rarely by other visitors (noticed about 3 times a year). Scheduled visits (appointments and neighbors) don’t count.

For around a hundred, it might be a fun hobby project to set everything up, but I doubt I would keep up with operating it consistently over time.

I only just saw your designs afterward: don’t you see the visitors through the side windows?
