Bertram10014 Jun 2020 08:02Hello,
I bought a mid-terrace house from a developer. Since I want a wooden floor and this option is not offered in their program, I will have to install the wooden planks (engineered wood flooring made of multiple layers) myself throughout the entire house after the handover, except for the ground floor hallway. Or have them installed.
Now the construction company is asking about the total thickness of the flooring system. The engineered wood flooring is 14mm thick, and the adhesive for gluing is about 3mm, totaling 17mm (about 0.67 inches). Are any other underlays, vapor barriers, membranes, or sealing layers required beneath the flooring? Or can I specify 17mm (0.67 inches) as the total installation height above the screed?

If you decide to do this, ask the floor installer, as they know their products and can give you a precise answer.
By the way, vapor barriers are only used in walls, and you don’t need any film here. You might want to consider impact sound insulation.

The parquet is 14mm (0.55 inches) thick, the adhesive for bonding about 3mm (0.12 inches) If you have 3mm (0.12 inches) of adhesive, you are doing something wrong. Calculate with 1mm (0.04 inches), no more than that.

Are additional underlays/vapour barriers, films, or waterproofing layers needed under the parquet? No, not with glued parquet. The subfloor just needs to be ready for installation.

Bertram10014 Jun 2020 12:35I would prefer to install the flooring myself because the rooms have simple layouts and this way I can save quite a bit of money.
I will ask a company again.
For the adhesive, you need a notched trowel. The notches are taller than 1mm (0.04 inches), right?

You need a notched spreader for the glue. The notches are higher than 1mm (0.04 inches), right? Yep, but so are the spaces between them. For glue that is 3mm (1/8 inch) thick when applied, you need at least a 6mm (1/4 inch) notch size, like for tiles. However, for parquet flooring, you use a triangular notch. That really only leaves about 1mm (0.04 inches) of glue thickness.
