Ahnungslos13 Mar 2013 19:04I will soon start building, and now the following question comes up regarding the utility connections.
We are planning to use a satellite dish for TV, and for internet and phone, we want to go with Kabel Deutschland.
Would you still have a Telekom line installed in the house as well? Or is that even required?
I actually don’t want to have anything to do with Telekom anymore, but I also don’t want to be dependent on just one provider. Would you bite the bullet and have a connection installed and pay for it, even if you might never use it?

In any case, have it installed. What will you do if someday your boss says: “Hey, you’ll be working from home occasionally from now on, and I’ll pay for your home internet connection” (like my boss does currently)? And this internet connection has to be through Telekom due to contracts. Then you’re stuck with a problem and might have to dig everything up again.
Of course, your boss can hardly force you to do that, but I personally like to see working from home as an opportunity to avoid some of the daily commute traffic.
Or another scenario: you experience performance issues with Kabel Deutschland. What then? Or they terminate your contract because your child causes monthly traffic of 100 gigabytes (I have already been threatened by KabelBW for distributing my own Linux distribution and having massive traffic peaks over three months).
So I would invest the 400 € or have a remote office set up at your house for free, just in case.

I basically see it the same way. This is probably not the place to cut costs.
@Wastl: No, I haven’t called yet; I only did an availability check online. According to that, it should work, but I heard yesterday that our future neighbors had some issues with their telecom connection. Apparently, the telecom provider didn’t connect them. But I’ll ask about that.
