Hello,

our construction work will start in three weeks. However, I have the problem that our temporary power box is located about 100 meters (330 feet) away from the construction site.

1. I need a 75-meter (245 feet) extension cable for heavy-duty power. Where is the best place to get one?

2. For regular power, I wanted to use cable reels. Would three 40-meter (130 feet) cable reels be okay, or is that too long? What should I consider?

Ask your electrician or a local equipment rental company, as they usually have cables of this length available for rent.
Why is the temporary power distribution box located so far away?
It would be more practical to have your electrician install it with a suitable cable cross-section directly to the construction site.

We had two extensions installed between the temporary power connection and the construction site, each with a junction box. This should be done by the company that set up your temporary power connection.

Basically, you can’t connect 3 x 40m (130 feet) cable reels in a row! The machines would run, but the cable would heat up excessively.

There is too much voltage drop, which increases the current (amperage). This means a high current flows through your drill. The machine’s performance is affected and it’s not good for the motor.

1. Ask your energy provider if they can extend the cable closer to you.

2. Contact the company doing the electrical installation. They are usually well equipped for this kind of issue.

Using a long cable might result in higher resistance, which means that at the same voltage from the power source, LESS current flows (lower current strength). I don’t think this would directly damage a machine; it would just cause motors to run “slower.” However, if the three cable reels have cables with a large cross-sectional area and good contacts, the resistance will not be much higher than that of a single cable with the same cross-sectional area. (And the cables will not get warmer either).
