Hello everyone,

We plan to sow grass soon. Are there any recommendations?

About 120 sqm (1300 sq ft), mostly sunny, only shaded in the evening hours. It should be a "play" lawn since our kids are still young.

Is a standard off-the-shelf seed mix from the hardware store sufficient, or what should be used?

So, for us
  • Grass seed RSM 2.1 Standard 25 g/m² (25 grams per square meter) for 1.01 €/m² net
  • Sod turf RSM 2.1 Standard, ready-to-lay turf according to DIN 18917, 6.72 €/m² net

Since we have many square meters, the decision was clearly against the sod turf.

And now I remember again: The seed should be labeled as standard seed mixture, meaning RSM. There are quite a few, for example:
RSM 1.1 Ornamental lawn
RSM 2.1 Utility lawn Standard
RSM 2.2 Utility lawn for dry conditions
RSM 2.3 Utility lawn for sports/recreational use
and many more. You select the appropriate one and then buy it. Don’t overseed! If you do, the fast-growing varieties will quickly take over and the slower ones won’t be able to grow through.

With rolled turf, it shows who still had money left at the end.
We have already seen some very nice examples of good lawns after one year here – so I would save yourself the expense of rolled turf. It’s not necessary and can also go wrong.

It also depends on the area. For a few ares, it's a minor issue, but once it exceeds 1000 sqm (10,764 sq ft), it becomes a significant investment.
