BananaJoe17 Jul 2020 11:41Hello everyone,
We are currently considering having a built-in cupboard custom-made under the stairs in the hallway for coats, shoes, etc.
At the moment, we have planned a two-stringer staircase (with risers) and are wondering if this type of staircase is suitable for such an idea due to its relatively open construction. Visually, we prefer the built-in cupboard to be completely “closed” (I hope this makes sense; if not, just try searching for “cabinet built-in cupboard staircase” on Google images—the first result should give you an idea). From an initial online search, it seems that this might not work very well with two-stringer staircases because, on the one hand, the treads extend beyond the stringers, and—what I believe is the main issue—the railing is attached to the stringers. This would mean the cupboard would have to be built or boxed in around the railing supports.
Does anyone have suggestions on which types of staircases are best suited for a project like this? We can still choose the staircase type...
Thank you very much!

BananaJoe17 Jul 2020 11:48Yes, I also thought about a stringer staircase... however, with most stringer staircases I have seen so far, the handrail is attached to the stringer itself and not to the steps, so this problem would still remain...
