ᐅ Building Stair Railings with Aerated Concrete Blocks – Is It Stable?

I have a question... Our construction manager wants to build a railing on our 1.07m (3.5 ft) wide concrete staircase using 7cm (2.75 inches) Ytong blocks and then plaster it...

From the beginning, we wanted a masonry railing, but now the stairwell opening is quite large, so a full wall from top to bottom across the two floors is no longer possible...

But will something like this hold? Has anyone done this before?

This also works with drywall. The profiles were screwed into the side of the concrete staircase. The gypsum board was then filled, sanded, and finished with a fine plaster coat.
And yes, it gets really dirty easily. That’s why oak will be installed on top in the next few days.

Can you tell me which spotlights you used?

They are made of painted metal and have a very elegant appearance. However, installation is quite complex because they require a flush-mounted frame.

Is it going to be built directly onto the stairs or next to them?

…because our stairwell is quite narrow, and I would actually prefer the side wall to act as a kind of railing—that is, not a continuous wall running up the middle.

Is something like that even possible? See both examples in the attachment.

Hello xxsonicxx!

Did you build the stairs as shown in the pictures, or did you find those images online?
I would like to do something similar.
I’m curious how you fixed the newel posts into the wall?

Thanks!

Hello Snowman,

sorry… due to the open floor plan and the lighter, more airy look, we decided to go with a metal railing instead of a masonry wall… even though the price initially shocked me.

There are plenty of pictures available… try checking Pinterest.

Best regards and good luck

Where does the first photo of the staircase come from?

We built it as shown in the first picture... The staircase is made of concrete, and the railing is glued to the stairs with aerated concrete blocks... it holds...
