ᐅ Building Stair Railings with Aerated Concrete Blocks – Is It Stable?

I have a question... Our construction manager wants to build a railing on our 1.07m (3.5 ft) wide concrete staircase using 7cm (2.75 inches) Ytong blocks and then plaster it...

From the beginning, we wanted a masonry railing, but now the stairwell opening is quite large, so a full wall from top to bottom across the two floors is no longer possible...

But will something like this hold? Has anyone done this before?

Hello, as promised, I just want to quickly let you know that using the 7 Ytong blocks was absolutely no problem... The staircase is built and stable...

Thanks for the feedback! We will go ahead and do it that way as well.

The staircase is currently being plastered, and after that it should be even more solid... but even now, contrary to my concerns, it is very stable.

Hello, I’ve been reading along. We also want to build a Ytong wall instead of a metal railing on the upper floor – ours will be 15cm (6 inches) thick. Do you really think it’s stable enough without adding extra reinforcement like steel bars?

What are you planning? At 15cm (6 inches), I wouldn't worry at all. With plaster, it’s almost 20cm (8 inches).

At that thickness, it probably won't look very delicate anymore...
