Hello fellow home builders,

First of all, I would like to thank you all as a silent reader for the helpful and valuable information you share.

We are now ready to start building and have finally found a plot of land (private sale), which is completely covered with paving stones.

This plot used to be a municipal depot, where our local council used it as a vehicle yard, including for trucks.

The land is very flat, and we would need to remove the paving stones ourselves.

My question to you is whether there are more advantages to such a plot since there are already quite a few paving stones and gravel present, or if there are more disadvantages because the soil underneath the gravel might have been “damaged” due to oil leaks or similar issues.

Wishing you a safe and healthy start to the new year.

Best regards

It depends. Normally, the plot of land should not be contaminated. What does the seller (the city?) say about this risk?

What exactly is the structure of the base? If the soil is contaminated with oil, it will become expensive.

hmm, I would even see this as partially advantageous. There is a load-bearing layer, so you can build the house/garage etc. directly on it... a driveway is already there as well... and so on.

It depends! In my opinion, a soil report is necessary to determine which measures are required to properly construct the desired house (basement?).

For landscaping purposes, soil compaction is usually more of a disadvantage.

What kind of paving is it? Is it possible to make some money by selling it, or will you more likely face disposal costs?
