Hello,
I am currently planning the renovation of our house. The house will be divided vertically to create two independent apartments, each spanning two floors. Apartment 1 already has a staircase from the ground floor to the upper floor, but a new staircase needs to be planned for Apartment 2. The ceiling height is 240 cm (94 inches), and the ceilings are constructed with wooden joists. As far as I know, it should generally be possible to create an opening in the ceiling for a staircase. However, I am struggling with the design of the staircase layout: the apartment will be occupied by my father, so the staircase should have as few turns as possible, partly for safety reasons and partly to make a potential stairlift more affordable. Ideally, the staircase would be straight, or have a landing, or a slight turn with a landing at the beginning or end.
The plan is a first draft; Room 2 and the bathroom can be made smaller, door positions can be changed, etc. Also, the separated hallway is not a must—this wall could be removed.
The entrance marked in red ideally should not be blocked by the staircase (the door will be locked but may need to be opened again for care purposes).
The restroom on the ground floor can only be located at this position.
Are there any possible solutions? Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂
Thank you.
Best regards,
Ev

However, I am overwhelmed with planning the staircase layout:You are not alone. There is far too little information visible here. Please show the entire house – both apartments, floor plans old/new, and also a cross-section that reveals the beam layout. Also keep in mind: a) that extensive renovations might jeopardize the existing building protection status, and b) fire safety between the residential units.https://www.instagram.com/11antgmxde/
